Gap year????
I am currently in year 13 and have decided to take a gapyear as there is no chance of me getting into my chosen course(optometry), I will apply next year as i'll have my grades ready which will hopefully be AAA. Can anyone give me any advice about what to do in my gap year?I cant volunteer abroad as im not really allowed or financially ready for that right now..any ideas on what i can do ? Has anyone taken a gap year and got in?How was the application process? Doesnt need to be optom related btw thanksss

As long as you are doing something constructive with your gap year, it won't have any negative impact on your chances of success.

It helped a lot because whilst my peers were worrying about uni, all my focus was on my exams.
I let my college know I didn't want to apply for uni until I finished, and they offered me the opportunity to apply to ucas through them, instead of applying individually. I'm not sure all colleges will let you do this, but this helped me massively as I now had a written reference from a lecturer in the college I was at.
I'm on my gap year now, and like you I was unsure what to do with myself for a whole year. I thought about volunteering, but the financial constraints played a part in it. I decided to work on achieving a handful of moderate goals that I could focus on (I mentioned this in my personal statement). I've been working in a local supermarket, getting a lot more hours in and saving a decent portion of my wages for University. This helps out a lot for when you start uni, you're richer than everyone else
As well as that, I've been learning to drive (badly), working towards a grade 5 piano exam, started going to a gym, and SOCIALISING because I don't have A levels to revise for mwahahahha.
It may not seem like a lot, but I'm pretty content right now. Make sure you save time to do whatever you want, as It's so important! Make sure your gap year is worth it though, you should remain productive. Don't wanna start uni in vegetable mode.

Have you thought of getting a job in the NHS as it's great expierence for any health care profession
Health care assistants as bank staff are usually available at all hospitals
We get lots of people working in our hospital whilst at uni and the skills are transferable and you get relatively well paid

Thanks Soo much this is so helpful especially as im hoping to go to Cardiff Uni, what did you apply for? I am definitely going to learn how to drive next year, well try anyway but Ive applied for jobs and the trouble is you need experience which i dn have. My sixth form college told me to apply through them and they also said that hey would help with my personal statement (thank god), speaking of which how did you incorporate what youre going to do in it, and how much work experience did you have for your course? Honestly thanks SO much for the answer youre basically where i want to be next year lol anyway good luck for uni!

Hi! Thats a good idea but do you know he specific job titles? Also, I dont have much experience at all except for volunteering in a charity shop but I doubt that will count. Do you have any tips for applying? Thanks btw

It's cool! I'm gonna be studying pharmacology at Uni. I didn't quite have the grades but it looked fun so I took the chance and got in eyyyy.
With regards to jobs, you barely need experience. I mean I'm working at Tesco, and you didn't need experience at all. Just to show the employer your commitment to work in the interview. I thought I wanted to do Medicine, so I did a week's worth of experience in a GP Surgery, shadowing doctors on emergency calls as well as working in the dispensary n that sort of stuff. I'd do a little research on what sort of experience you could do for the general type of course you're interested in taking, and write a bunch of letters to people asking for experience. Even if it's working in a care home that sort of thing unis will love. Also you could perhaps ask your lecturers in College what sort of experience you could apply for?(They've gotta be nice and friendly letters tho fam). I incorporated all this sh*t into my personal statement talking about how doing this leaves me in a productive state of mind for uni, allowing me to broaden myself/mature etc. I mean you've only got 4000 characters to cram it all in for the personal statement, but it's good to mention it.

Well Done! Pharmacology looks good in Cardiff Uni. I have no idea how you passed that online test for Tesco literally everyone says its impossible, no joke. You must hve a really good CV and personal statement.

Finding a job is the most obvious thing to do. You can then save up money for uni as well as possibly raising money to enable you to go volunteer abroad over summer. The alternative to that is volunteering.

Personally i dont think u needed a gap year.U wanted to study Optometry but u needed AAA grades however u are predicted BBB?They can still give u a conditional offer where their say u need these grades and u will get in.

I am predicted BBC but optom is really competitive and the deadline for applying has passed in my school but are you saying that can go through clearing or adjustment in the summer if i havent applied?

It is competitive but they can give u a offer of something like"If u get XXX grades in xxx subjects then we will give u the place."
The deadline for most of the courses including optometry is on sunday.U still have to apply on ucas if u want to go through clearing since u need the ucas code.After the 15th u can still apply but it will be counted as a late entry.
