Can insurance companies pass on black box info?

I've just been insured with Insurethebox and have a black box fitted, but as far as i'm aware the only purpose of it is to calculate how many bonus miles you can earn by driving safely.

Can they pass on your driving information to other insurance companies if you choose not to renew with them?

no

So the black box is essentially useless and you don't get punished for poor driving?

No it is not pointless.

They will record your info and if you keep mucking about they'll cancel your policy or at least give you a stern warning. Some insurance companies say that the only punishment is a higher premium next year (unless you do something terrible like driving 120mph which they will cancel policy).

BUT they will not forward your driving info to other insurance companies as its got to do with privacy laws and other fine print stuff. They can only give info to the police if they have a warrant. So if you have an abysmal driving score the next insurer doesnt have to know.

Ok, so if they offered you a high premium the following year you could just choose not to renew and go elsewhere?

Yep thats what I did.

Just be careful not to get your policy cancelled or you are screwed.

Nope, but you will have to make a declaration about your driving record to the new company ofc and for obvious reasons that has to be truthful. It is not useless becayse if they decide to cancel it, then you are in a whole world of pain trying to get new insurance.

That would just be to declare any prior driving convictions though, not any info on how you drive overall?

They can share it within a group of insurers (e.g. BISL sharing between subsidiaries). Check the small print of the policy.

thats only if OP has an accident/gets his car stolen or set on fire etc.

low driving score on a blackbox app doesnt matter.

I'd have to look at the wording of the declaration on different policies. They dont pass on information though which is slightly different.
I think it was your mention of poor driving. The information is kept to themselves, but if your dribing is poor enough for them to make a change ore reject you, then the other insurer could well ask you about any infringements (which is less than a conviction) claims etc. They dont need the infop to ask you that question, just try out some of the comparison sites and you cna see what they ask.
