I didn't finish uni but this was at a privately rented house. They may have had whisky or something around Divali but there was certainly never any going out 5 nights a week or nothing like that. Fresh food is not something I would ever compromise on and it is not expensive to get these ingredients. The western habit of spending more on alcohol than on food is incredibly worrying, as indeed is the culture of promiscuity and informal copulations. In an ideal world you wouldn't have state endorsing and subsidising these debased behaviours and most Indians I met would severely shun those who engage in them outside marriage.
I have to say, I worked with four indian guys last year and they were so desperate to pull it was pathetic. In fact it was downright creepy. So nice try, but they're just as 'bad' as westerners.
It's reading stuff like this that makes me glad that my parents gave me chores to do growing up. I know people who are going to university and they don't even know how to put the washing on.
Very true and I agree. When I lived in the halls I used to share with a guy; his parents came up every weekend just to collect his washing!

Bloody hell. If I asked my parents to do that, they'd laugh me off the phone. It's quite sad, what's he going to do when he actually has to live alone...

That was the point I made to his parents. It was the same principle for him when he didn't know how to cook. He had pre-ready-made meals and put them in the freezer.
Hang on - you'd rather be late to teaching, or skip socialising to stay home and clean!?
I accept some people are cleaner than others and leaving food around is indeed pretty gross, but it seems to me your priorities are out of wack.
That's a lot of bank shifts she's doing. Perhaps she pays for a cleaner will all that extra money?
You misunderstood, I meant 'spending time' in bed, wasting cleaning time and lecture preparation time, thus making you late for lectures, not staying home to miss them.
My housemate made a cleaning schedule and I put it in the bin.
Cleaning schedules are the worst! My timetable changes all the time so I don't know when I'll be free, and I don't want to be nagged by a housemate to clean the bathroom (which is probably already decent) when I've been out of the house from 8am to 8pm

I wouldn't mind if she had spoken to me about it beforehand, she just put it on the fridge! It's so passive aggressive.

Same! I'm heading off to uni next year and honestly I'm so glad that at least I know I'll be able to cook for myself every day and won't be living off of instant noodles/ packaged food as well being able to pick up after myself.
I was at a student house yesterday, and it was a complete tip. Mess everywhere on the floor, the bin was overflowing and rubbish was being purposely put around it, the bathroom was dirty, the kitchen was filthy was washing up and old food everywhere, the bedroom I went in had laundry everywhere and pizza boxes and beer bottles strewn across the floor, everywhere needed hoovering and parts of the house were damp.
Why do students choose to live like this? Do they want to get sick and/or live in chaos and mess? I'm 16 but I couldn't live like that at ll; if something needs cleaning or doing no matter how big or small, I just get on and do it. It disgusts me how people live everyday like this; I was told seven people live in that house, I don't see how none of them can be bothered to look after where they live.
Sad but it's a reality and these people are not bothered by mess ! Now I'm a lazy person - literally take ages to clean up etc but see when it gets too much like mess everywhere then out of rage/disgust I get the vacum (I live with my parents btw & im only 14 :/ ) and moving away/ living independantly is a big move but it doesn't mean you don't clear up after yourself ?! Mum has a friend like that whose a housewife but doesn't clean up/Care about it tbh.. when we stay there, we try to advise her on ways to keep clean ! Don't let kids run about with food, etc and sometimes do her cleaning for her lol
