Just going to jump into this conversation because I can relate. At one point I had 30+ universities on my list from all over the world. Spanning all continents other than Africa pretty much

@Michiyo has made really good points: choose the universities that you want to go to because often times parents are quite ignorant about this process because they focus on the prestige of the university rather than what is suitable for the student. You have to take initiative in this process! Michiyo has offered a good summary about Exeter's Flexible Combined Honours Degree and its merits, especially when you don't know what you want to do and you don't want to a complete liberal arts degree (American style system). Personally, I think that FCH offers a great system which combines the specialisation of the UK system while allowing you more flexibility in choosing more subjects that you want to take.

My advice for you is that if you don't really want to go to Oxford or Cambridge, you have to ask yourself if it is worth going through that arduous process... I applied this year and all the waiting, the interviews and more waiting was absolutely tiresome, and after all that effort you can still get rejected. Research the course (modules) and the tutorial system and decide whether that Oxbridge is worth going through all that trouble. (for me it was, but for many people I know it wasn't) Taster days will also be very helpful as well. If you have any questions about the process just ask, although I wasn't successful, I can try and help!

As for London unis, idk if you live in London (I think you do) but if you do accommodation and stuff do not apply as much so I guess I can skip talking about that

Now as for St Andrews, Time for me to give a Michiyo-style promotion of St Andrews because it is probably going to be my firm  What I really like about St Andrews is that the Scottish system also allows for flexibility. In your first year (for you it is BSc because Maths and Physics) you choose 3 subjects to study in each semester, so for example, you can choose to do, Maths, Physics and maybe Comp Sci or a European Language. In the second year, you drop one of the subjects so the main subject which you got in for and a secondary subject which ever one you choose to continue. In the third and fourth years you can either choose to drop your second subject and just continue with your main subject for a single honours degree or continue both subjects for a joint honours degree. So this allows breadth of study especially when you don't know which field you would want to get into.

I guess one of the criticisms people have about Scotland in general is that the degrees are four years instead of three years but like Michiyo pointed out about Exeter(you can add a year for study abroad/work placement), in the third year of your time in St Andrews, you can study abroad at many great institutions worldwide. You can also have European work placements for science students but I do not know how that works unfortunately :/

Honestly, don't care about what your parents want  you are an amazing chicken you can make your own decisions. I basically told my (asian) parents 2-3 weeks before the Oxbridge deadline that I didn't want to do medicine and I wanted to pursue something else. You can definitely choose the university/ course that is right for you :yep: If you have any questions about universities and such, just ask, I'll be happy to help

^THIS. @TheOtherSide., this fellow knows what he is talking about. :yep:

Agreed. FCH is love, FCH is life! :daydreaming: (Funnily enough, Exeter's Liberal Arts degree has a much narrower range of subjects than FCH.)

'you are an amazing chicken you can make your own decisions.' - THE TRUTH HAS BEEN SPOKEN!

Nice St Andrew's promotion there

God, I wish parents would stop pushing their children to go to whatever university and do whatever degree they think is best. So many people ended up regretting their university and course choices since they were forced upon them by their parents.

Yes, my mum would have loved it if my sisters and I all followed through with her plan to us. This is basically what she wanted us to study in university and the jobs she wanted us to have.

Oldest sister - degree in Theatre/Drama and became an actress
Second oldest sister - degree in Journalism and became a journalist or writer
Older sister - got into Medicine and became a doctor or nurse
Me - did Law and became either a lawyer or a writer

Just because this is what she wanted for us, it does not mean it would have fit us. This is what we ended up studying or will study.

Oldest sister - degree in Accounting, now an event organiser
Second oldest sister - did a year of Journalism, hated it, completed a degree in Modern Languages, now high up the HR chain of a company so famous that if I told you the name, you would recognise it instantly
Older sister - considering a degree in Photography/Film/Media or going to the Police Academy
Me - degree in International Relations (and Strategy and International Security with Japanese if I get into Exeter, and European Studies otherwise)

See the pattern here? None of us followed the plan our mother set for us until the end; we did our own thing and we are happy. The choices she made for us simply did not fit us at all. My oldest sister, albeit a good actress, always had a gift for maths and science. My second oldest sister actually did what my mother wanted of her, but found she disliked it so much she could not have seen it through, so she did something she found more enjoyable instead and it went well. My older sister is extremely artistic and athletic, but she cannot do maths and science to save her life, so there was no way she would even have considered medicine. As for me, I find law to be boring and corrupt and I am far too lazy to memorise all the laws I would need to know as a lawyer (although my memory is good enough), not to mention my conscience would not be able to take it if I defended someone (a person, company, etc) who was guilty. I also do not take conflict well while being a lawyer is literally arguing to convince the judge you are right even if you are not, which I would hate.

Moral of the story: your parents do not know what university and course is right for you. Only YOU do. Chances are they are just projecting their failed ambitions on you or that they are so entitled/controlling they think you should do as they say simply because they made you.

If you are interested in astronomy, go for it, our beloved chicken! Do what you want, not what your parents want. :h:

Because Exeter's Liberal Arts Degree only includes Arts, there isn't a Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree  Plus they already have FCH, it would be kind of counter-productive/unnecessary for them to have a Liberal Arts and Sciences degree with FCH

Since you promote Exeter to like everyone online, I was thinking that I need to stop my shameless promotion game as well  starting with St A's

Good story :yep: very true too :five: I agree with what you said about law

To be fair, you might need physics to do an astronomy related degree because they seem to go hand in hand with each other  maybe Astrophysics? @TheOtherSide.

I meant that their Liberal Arts degree does not include all the arts subjects (IR, for example).

What can I say, I love Exeter  That is why I boost Exeter in the Russell Group hurt/heal game every day

Shameless promotion is one of the things I excel in :yep:

Thank you :colondollar: IKR? I could write a list of reasons why I would never read Law in university  (No offence to those who want to study or already study law in university, it is just not something I would not do. :h: )

Exactly, so it's not that great for a Liberal Arts Degree :yep:

Hahaha St A's isn't a Russell Group Uni so can't boost them  we should team up and kill Notts

Me too  just not for me
