Accommodation at Uni of Leeds

Hi,
last week I received an offer from my first choice university - Leeds! I am unsure about accommodation at Leeds though as there is so much choice! I have visited Central Village, I quite liked it there but I have read online that it is not very sociable. I also visited the Henry Price accommodation which I didn't mind but I didn't like the idea of a Jack & Jill bathroom. I am looking for self-catered halls with an en-suite and I would like it to be fairly close to the university (up to a 20 minute walk). I have heard good things about Leodis and iQ as well.
I'm just looking for suggestions really from anyone who has stayed in halls at Uni of Leeds.
Many thanks

Sentinal Tower is just located at the bottom of the hill (15 minutes to walk to campus) and it is self-catered.

Leodis is a nice accommodation which is at a good distance but I think there's quite a lot of international students who live there. I heard iQ is quite a distance away from uni but offers nice accommodation. For ensuite, I personally prefer central village. Great distance between town and uni.

Im currently living at Montague burton which is nice, quite socialable and very close to uni. It is the cheapest but it offers shared bathrooms only. It's worth considering since they are refurbishing the blocks which won't be finished until 2018 so the downside is that there is no guarantee for you to be offered a refurbished flat. I think about half the blocks will be refurbished by September 2017. I'm lucky enough to be in a refurbished flat, best thing about it is the free washing machine useage so that's my money saved on laundry!

Congratulations on getting in, I'm a Masters student and this is my 6th year at Leeds Uni. I've lived in smaller residences (twice), and in my first year I was in Liberty Dock. If I could give you a piece of advice as to what accommodation to go for, it would be the more sociable ones. The absolute biggest regret that I have heard so many times is people wishing they had more sociable flat mates after choosing an accommodation either because it had the best facilities, or it was closest to Uni or it had an on-suite. If you spend a year in a flat full of unsociables you WILL hate it, I absolutely guarantee it. Living with friendly flatmates in a 'not as nice' accommodation is far better than living in a swanky flat with flatmates you barely know because they spend half their time playing video games.

So, with that in mind, I would try to stay clear of central village. I've neverbeen to Henry Price before but I walk by it every day and it seems very sociable if not the most, so much so that it's the most difficult to get into given its popularity and smaller size, and the prospect as 100s of flat partys. Haven't been inside Charles Morris but it's swanky a.f. and a place your likely to get a decent mix and international and home students from what I've seen and heard - it's also smack bang on campus and right next to LUU's friday club night 'Fruity'. There used to be 2 accommodations called Clarence Dock (where I lived in first year) and Bodington (which was the biggest before central village was built). These 2 were legendary for social life despite being miles (literally miles) away from campus, but have since been bulldozed (Bodington) and now privately owned and renamed (Liberty dock) to accommodate both Leeds Uni and Leeds Met students. Devonshire is fancy and the price shows, I've only been once but I've heard its pretty much just full of posh people - but I'm guessing that's what people say just looking at the cost per week - it's also like a 15 minute walk to campus. James Baille is right next to Devonshire and seems to have a pretty good social life (from the block party i went to a while back which was insane) - also visited my mate there a few times and people were pretty lively, despite worse furnishing than other places. Not sure if that's changed since i went a couple of years ago. Lydon Hall is essentially an extension of Charles Morris given it is only a footpath away, but its facilities are nowhere near the level that Charles Morris has - its also lively in terms of socialising. Oxley is frickin miles away and I've no idea what its like. St Marks is post grad only so thats a no go. Sentinel Towers is pretty crap, its in a crap location and the walk in just sucks big time - the same goes for The Tannery. Lupton is a weird one, I've heard its great and its crap from 2 different people, all I know is its location is nowhere near as good as those that are more towards headingley (James Baille and Devonshire) or those on campus. Unfortunately I know nothing about iQ. And whatever you do, stay away from 'smaller residences' - these are houses owned by Leeds Uni that get filled with those who don't want to live in halls i.e. you'll make fewer friends and have a worse time.

If I were to rank them in terms of what I think are best in terms of social life (most important) and location:
1) Charles Morris
2) Henry Price
3) Lydon Hall
3) Devonshire / James Baille

Bear in mind that Henry Price is by far the most over subscribed - you'll be fighting a fair few people to get a spot. I lived with someone in my 2nd year who applied for it, never got in, and was put in 'smaller residences'. The guy was a fresher and he didn't get the fresher lifestyle which is crap.

I'd say put Charles Morris down as your favourite (if you can afford it, if not go for Lydon Hall), and James Baille as your second choice - if they allow 2nd choices.

Whichever you get, remember that your first year is the most chilled out year you'll get. So, make every effort to meet people, whether its your flat mates, course mates - join a society or sports club (or create one like me). You're only a fresher once.

Hey, I'm hoping to go to Leeds and I am looking for accommodation that ideally has an en suite and is sociable. Preferably no more than a 20 min walk from campus but this is not essential. Could you please help me by giving me an idea of which accommodations are the more sociable ones? Thank you!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. Unfortunately I have just applied for Central Village recently, so I'm hoping that it is worth it! At one of the open days I viewed Henry Price and I liked it apart from the fact it had Jack & Jill bathrooms. So yeah, it looks like it's going to be Central Village now - just hope that I don't regret it.
Thanks once again

No problem, you'll be more than fine, those were just my personal preferences. Central village has great facilities and is fortunately one of the nicest to live in. And if you get in and in the worst case scenario your flat seems unsociable at first, you just have to give it some time. Most people are nervous and excited moving in for the first time. Don't forget that there's literally hundreds of rooms in each block, meaning there's plenty of people to meet. Chances are you're going to meet people you'll be friends with for years. I'm in fact having a reunion next weekend with the people I lived with in first year, who I actually went on to live with in 2nd and 3rd year. Anyway good luck !

The location and facilities made me choose it more than anything so I just hope it is fairly sociable too, but I guess it depends who I share with. Thank you so much

Hi, hopefully you've already visited the Leeds Uni website for accommodation - this gives weekly rent prices, en-suite y/n, contract length etc etc. If you can afford it, I'd say Charles Morris has the best of both those preferences. Central Village has en-suite facilities, but is less sociable. Henry Price is the most sociable but lacks en-suite toilets (Jack and Gill toilets). James Baille is also sociable and from what I remember it does have en-suite toilets. Personally, I would stay clear of 'smaller residences', Sentinel Towers, the tannery, and Oxley - purely because they seem to have socially quieter than most others. I'm unsure about Devonshire's en-suite situation, but it is not as sociable as James Baille (they're right next to each other). I'd aim for Charles Morris over Henry price since it is larger and there's greater chance of you getting a room due to Henry Price's popularity. Central Village is nice and right on the cusp of campus, has en-suite, but has a large amount of international students. This isn't a bad thing, but for international students it can be more difficult for them to socialise due to the language barrier, which is of course does not represent all international students. But this sometimes means, for example, Chinese students cluster together because they don't have to translate everything they say like they do when talking to English students. This occurs across all residences, it is just more pronounced in central village because of its size and how it appeals to internationals. But like I said on an earlier post, if you are willing to make friends then you will, regardless of where you live. - Danny
Does anybody know anything about the accommodation at Iconinc's The Edge? Any buses?

In particular is it an easy walk to campus and is it a sociable place to stay?

Thanks
I've not been to Iconinc nor do I know anyone or heard of anyone from there. It seems a somewhat short walk from what I can tell, maybe 15 minutes or less to get to campus. But since it isn't a Leeds Uni campus, the amount of freshers applying there will be low. I'd play it safe and go with a Leeds Uni residence where you're guaranteed to be living with nearly all first years. At the price they're charging you won't be getting your money's worth, despite it's luxury apartments. You can get a decent room on campus, en-suite, for cheaper. I don't know of any buses that take a route from there toward campus, there probably is. Regarding walking in to uni, the rule of thumb is if you're walking North toward campus, then its quite up hill especially up the main road (Albion road / Otley road), if walking south toward campus (Hyde park, Headingley, Meanwood), then its a fair bit flatter.

Hey everyone , just firmed my offer at Leeds and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the accommodation at the following places is like? Mary Morris, Montagu Burton, Lupton Residences. Any reviews or alternate suggestions would be amazing, mostly picked cause they suit my price range but if you know anywhere else really good just tell me, I don't mind about sharing toilet/shower facilities but really want a strong social experience  Thank you for your time
I've just firmed Leeds too

Can anyone tell me about Leodis or Henry Price? What are they like? How sociable are they?

Leodis is one of the sociable accommodations, but it is further out. I have a few friends from there and they tend to socialise with other people from Leodis too!

Henry Price is most definitely one of the most sociable accommodations at Leeds. I have so many friends from HP and there is no doubt there will be a party there at least once a week. Because there are no lifts, you have to walk past every single floor to get to your floor and on the way you meet people and then conversation just starts and you engage and realise you have so much in common with them. Everyone who is at HP always opens their flat door and music will be blasting and everyone is more than welcome to come in. Because theres so many people in the flat (9 people usually) its so sociable because theres so many of you. Also everyone seems so friendly here and they literally don't care where you are from, if your there for a good time, you'll get along with everybody. I will say HP is not the place for you to sit and revise and have some alone time. Everyone is in everybody else's space and thats why it's so sociable! I wish I picked this place because university as much as it is about degrees, it is about the people you meet as well. Hope this helps guys! Xxx

Ah, thanks so much for all the advice, Henry Price sounds great!

How've you been finding life at Leeds? And is there any other accommodation you'd recommend if I'm looking for somewhere self-catered and sociable?

Hi, I was just wondering if you are able to submit more than one application for accommodation at Leeds? I was wondering because I have applied for Central Village, however, I know that it is one of the most popular ones so I was wondering if more than one application can be made in order to have a back-up option?
Thanks

What are your opinions of on James baillie park?x
Just got an offer from Leeds today - unable to firm it up as I haven't received all my other responses yet but it will deffo be my first!! I'm looking for an ensuite (not essential), sociable but not too expensive option (same as everyone else haha) - I'm thinking Henry Price / James Baillie or Leodis at the moment, but I keep hearing stories about people not getting their first choices and ending up somewhere they really don't like?? How does that work - what sort of system is there for first/second choices? Thank you!!

You only get to enter one choice. And then there is a list of about 5 options for you to list from 1 to 5 (least to most important). Eg. On campus, en suite, price etc.

Henry price is oversubscribed each year so if you apply for Henry price the chances of getting it could be slim. I know loads of people who applied for Henry price including me who didn't get it.
