Congratulations on getting in, I'm a Masters student and this is my 6th year at Leeds Uni. I've lived in smaller residences (twice), and in my first year I was in Liberty Dock. If I could give you a piece of advice as to what accommodation to go for, it would be the more sociable ones. The absolute biggest regret that I have heard so many times is people wishing they had more sociable flat mates after choosing an accommodation either because it had the best facilities, or it was closest to Uni or it had an on-suite. If you spend a year in a flat full of unsociables you WILL hate it, I absolutely guarantee it. Living with friendly flatmates in a 'not as nice' accommodation is far better than living in a swanky flat with flatmates you barely know because they spend half their time playing video games.
So, with that in mind, I would try to stay clear of central village. I've neverbeen to Henry Price before but I walk by it every day and it seems very sociable if not the most, so much so that it's the most difficult to get into given its popularity and smaller size, and the prospect as 100s of flat partys. Haven't been inside Charles Morris but it's swanky a.f. and a place your likely to get a decent mix and international and home students from what I've seen and heard - it's also smack bang on campus and right next to LUU's friday club night 'Fruity'. There used to be 2 accommodations called Clarence Dock (where I lived in first year) and Bodington (which was the biggest before central village was built). These 2 were legendary for social life despite being miles (literally miles) away from campus, but have since been bulldozed (Bodington) and now privately owned and renamed (Liberty dock) to accommodate both Leeds Uni and Leeds Met students. Devonshire is fancy and the price shows, I've only been once but I've heard its pretty much just full of posh people - but I'm guessing that's what people say just looking at the cost per week - it's also like a 15 minute walk to campus. James Baille is right next to Devonshire and seems to have a pretty good social life (from the block party i went to a while back which was insane) - also visited my mate there a few times and people were pretty lively, despite worse furnishing than other places. Not sure if that's changed since i went a couple of years ago. Lydon Hall is essentially an extension of Charles Morris given it is only a footpath away, but its facilities are nowhere near the level that Charles Morris has - its also lively in terms of socialising. Oxley is frickin miles away and I've no idea what its like. St Marks is post grad only so thats a no go. Sentinel Towers is pretty crap, its in a crap location and the walk in just sucks big time - the same goes for The Tannery. Lupton is a weird one, I've heard its great and its crap from 2 different people, all I know is its location is nowhere near as good as those that are more towards headingley (James Baille and Devonshire) or those on campus. Unfortunately I know nothing about iQ. And whatever you do, stay away from 'smaller residences' - these are houses owned by Leeds Uni that get filled with those who don't want to live in halls i.e. you'll make fewer friends and have a worse time.
If I were to rank them in terms of what I think are best in terms of social life (most important) and location:
1) Charles Morris
2) Henry Price
3) Lydon Hall
3) Devonshire / James Baille
Bear in mind that Henry Price is by far the most over subscribed - you'll be fighting a fair few people to get a spot. I lived with someone in my 2nd year who applied for it, never got in, and was put in 'smaller residences'. The guy was a fresher and he didn't get the fresher lifestyle which is crap.
I'd say put Charles Morris down as your favourite (if you can afford it, if not go for Lydon Hall), and James Baille as your second choice - if they allow 2nd choices.
Whichever you get, remember that your first year is the most chilled out year you'll get. So, make every effort to meet people, whether its your flat mates, course mates - join a society or sports club (or create one like me). You're only a fresher once.
