Polls show two Labour by election losses

"When trouble comes it comes not single spies"

A nice little quote from Hamlet to introduce the news that polls show Labour well behind in the by elections in both the safe seats it is contesting next month. Source. Guido Fawkes.

This whilst not in government but the opposition. Losses, which if they happened, would have been unimaginable for decades.

Oh, Jeremy! Oh, Labour!

Thoughts? Is Labour a corpse or is there there life left in it?

What is the Labour Party for now? Has it just become (as one unnamed shadpw minister recently said) "the party of the public sector and Muslims?"

Hmm, polls actually in the constituencies?

With Tories not trying in Stoke and Nuttal as popular as Corbyn, that's going to be a Labour win.

The previous majority in Cumbria should mean they just hold that one too.

He's a Tory enabler. The only thing worse than having a "right wing" Labour Party is having a Labour Party that enables the tories, I'd rather they adopted some conservative policies on the economy and took them out, instead anyone who believes this is called a "blairite" in other words, they don't want to win elections and if you do, you're a traitor to the downwards movement.

One was an internal Labour poll showing a Tory gain, the one in Stoke a UKIP one.

The latter was a small sample size so of course has less credence. Actual Labour canvas returns however, is conclusive. Insofar as any pre ballot polling ever is.

Still no answer to the fairly basic question. What is Labour for?

The fact that they haven't even got a policy on the biggest political question in a generation, Brexit, says it all.

If you vote for Labour will we leave the EU or remain? If we leave will we be in the single market or not? Will immigration be controlled or not?

These are basic, burning questions. If Labour can't answer them why should anyone vote for it?

They can't. They aren't.

They can't. They aren't.


Labour is no longer a political party, it's not an opposition party. It's a party for a socialist movement backed by its members, executive committee and leadership.

It's a protest party in all but name.


Except they're not actually protesting anything beyond "Grr, we don't like the people in charge".

This is obvious to anyone outside the cult but his followers will just scream "Blairite" or "Red Tory" at you. When Labour get trounced they'll blame everyone except themselves.

Right! As much I dislike them, At least UKIP are doing something about not liking the people in charge

Yep well my first vote in 2020 is going to the conservatives. Theresa May isn't even my local MP and offered me work experience in her parliamentary office back in June just after the brexit vote and during her leadership campaign at such a busy time she didn't call it off, meanwhile my local labour MP who serves on no committees and holds no government position wasn't able to offer me anything. Thanks to Theresa I was able to get my first job shortly after, so who's really for the working and young people? In my experience I'd say the conservatives

Good for you. You clearly hadn't bothered to check it when you asked your question, though.

This was a Labour internal poll, leaked on a LABOUR website. Unlikely to be an attempt to move the markets, more like a disgruntled member or group of members trying to undermine their own leader.

Which in itself is hardly reassuring is it? :biggrin:

She IS my local MP, and although I am a Kipper and therefore won't vote for the Tories, she did a first rate job of dealing with a constituency matter I had once. I won't have a word said against her on a personal level. A great M P for her constituency.
If you want impartial and detailed analysis of polls then I wouldn't go anywhere apart from UKPollingReport.

Has something to say about Stoke and those supposed 'polls'...sample size allegedly only 179 and possibly conducted on Facebook or through LabourLeave's own database of contacts. Hardly reliable I would suggest.

I go to school near you in that case :tongue: she's definitely doing great job at a local level, I feel more part of her local community than I do at my own but in government she does seem to come across as a different person, I suppose that's because we see it through TV and the media whereas at a local level it's more personal.. if it were any other labour leader i'd probably vote them or abstain but with Corbyn I just feel like he won't disappear unless he gets crushed. I think In terms of domestic policy Theresa is from the centre of her party but she's certainly from the right when it comes to foreign policy. Also being in her office it's amazing to see how much she cared about local issues, we received a letter from a homeless man and she made sure he had somewhere to sleep and arranged for someone to meet him and give him advice on getting things back together. I find it strange how she was against the third runway at a local level but supported it in government? It didn't make sense to me but I guess that's politics.

When we leave the single market we will be able to negotiate the best deals for Britain, not be dragged along by whatever the unelected bureaucrats in the EU want us to do. In the words of President Trump, we are putting Britain first.
