It's definitely a not actually wanting to learn thing vs wanting it done for them. It's not remotely complicated.

Haha I get water in restaurants because I am stingy :')

Haha that is so true. I think they just want things done for them and then when you tell them it's easy enough to do themselves you get the whole "when you were younger I did everything for you" lecture

Haha hate it when you get that line, like ma I was legit incapable of doing anything when I was 2 years old. Hardly representative of your situation now mum.

So true :five:

I also hate the "when you're at my age you won't like it when your kids say the same thing" line

I always couple that with "That's fine, since I don't plan on having any kids".
That they shouldn't have gone.

Remember when you were younger and they told you to go to bed and switch off the game but you weren't at a save point :frown:

Trying not to laugh when your mum comes in like "Right, that's it, I'm turning it off now!!!" *switches off the TV and thinks the power button on the TV somehow also controls the console* After I realised she did this I just used to pause the game and turn off the TV every time I heard her coming up the stairs :toofunny:
My mum still doesn't understand that we no longer "tape" things. She still asks me to set the TiVo box to "tape" her favourite programs and to "tape" an album or movie on her USB stick.
Ok, I'm going to dive in but before I do, I am a mum....but also a daughter to parents a lot older than the ones all of you are talking about!

1. You don't need to shout into the telephone to be heard.
2. Yes mum, I will make sure I have my money and keys on me and I won't be irresponsible when I go out (I am 46 by the way)
3. On a journey or trip somewhere - Yes mum, I will call you when we are halfway there and when we arrive and then everyday at tea time so you know that I am still alive.
4. Follow the idiots guide I have left you for turning the blooming laptop on, do I really have to show you (for the 200th time) how to turn it on.

What they are good with

They understand and recognise that you can have different types of careers, being a games designer is one of them.
They recognise that young people being on their computer doesn't mean that they are wasting time and that it can be a great learning source.
Different hairstyles to the norm do not make that person bad.
Rock music is good.

Me as a parent

I imagine all manner of horrible things happening to the boys when they don't answer their phones, apart from that, I am pretty relaxed about everything else.

I have suffered from mental illness so I understand about that, low self esteem and lack of confidence.
I am technically minded (I own and run several websites)
I was an original gamer many moons ago before the children were born and even before consoles were around.
I was a bit of a wild child with a very independent streak, never really did conform and still don't now.
I am an insomniac, sleep is for the weak and if I want to still be up messing about on my laptop at 3am, then begger everyone else, if I am tired in the morning, then it's my own look out.
If you can't be bothered to organise your day, then don't expect me to. Grown adults are responsible for their own lives even if you still live in my house and that includes if you wish to stay in bed all day when home from uni, doesn't bother me either way.

My mom/dad doesn't understand:

- how i could do stuff on my tablet when it's detached from my keyboard ('It's a touchscreen, mom'
- how I've get loads of mates when I don't leave my room for months ('I've got Facebook, its been around, like, forever..'
- when i say 'I'll be out in a minute' this means the time it takes to finish and save the place I'm on in COD ( I know u don't understand, but just understand it's a matter of life & death for me..)
- not every young person is rubbish with money ('mom, I do maths, I can calculate in millions, I'm not gonna blow my entire student loan on drugs, sex & rock 'n' roll)
- I can understand what going on the TV without you giving me a running commentary on what a character is doing (' hey, the guy's reaching for his gun'. 'Dad, I can see it on the TV..'

What my mom/dad understands:
- Brexit is bad for young people (me), bad for the economy (them & me), bad for jobs (me).........& they voted Remain (I love you, mom & dad!!)

You mean TSR?

They don't understand how much of a big difference those extra 15 minutes of sleep make. :colonhash: Also, apparently it's fine to be rowdy and messy if you're a boy, but nahhhh not me. Because cleaning is def my main priority. Yup. Setting a real gr8 example for me, ma.

Exactly, sleep is precious and I don't like being waken up 10 minutes before I'm supposed to :colonhash:

1. It's not the 1970/80s anymore! if you have acne, in terms of getting into a relationship it's essentially game over!
2. I revise like no tomorrow, can i PLEASE stay up until ten playing with my friends. I spend all day revising (im 17) and they know it.
3. I look tired but i'm not 90% of the time.
4. when i get angry, i dont "grumble about" i get MAD :P
5. Dammit mum, i would clearly rather play with my friends rather than my 13 year old brother "because hes bored and i have to be a good brother"
6. My little brother has proper issues, he's nice but sometimes he just randomly flips out ITS NOT NORMAL!!!!
7. I can eat more than two mouthfuls before getting full.
8. Just because i got 75% not 95% doesnt mean ive failed, low grade boundaries do actually exist.
9. It takes more than a bottle of cider to get drunk.
10. Im not a flippin' idiot, i'm not going to drink like crazy then throw up at my friend's 18th (it was pretty boring and we both just watched some crappy videos while his family enjoyed football)

there are WAY more where that comes from but i think 10 is enough

Number 8 though, so relatable... I'm not a 100% Asian kid
tht me waking up 12 midday isnt lazy, its jus tht i dont sleep until like 4am :/

This is really amazing to see it from both perspectives!

How old are your kids? (guessing not kids anymore )

Lol no, waiting for that secret 13 gem :moon:

:shh:

:spank:
that mental illnesses don't get cured by just *trying harder*
it really makes communication between us difficult, I feel like I can't be open about my problems which really sucks bc sometimes it would be nice to have someone to talk to.

:indiff:

They grasped this about computers/laptops....but does it sink in that it works on phones/tablets too? no

I actually thought reading this "Oh god, what's ChaosKass" going to come up with on this thread. Then I realised I haven't seen any posts from her for quite a while...

Kass is banned. She's been reincarnated as Len Goodman.
That as a 28 year old I don't need a 45 minute lecture on what tog duvet to buy and I'm quite capable of arranging my own travel arrangements. It just my Dad that's like this really, I haven't lived with him since I was 13 so he still thinks I'm a kid.
