Here are a few FAQs that you may find useful. If you have any other questions, just let me know! =)
Any engineering or design company will give you some valuable experience, it just depends what you intend to learn from there and what specifically you want to study.
Some lessons (mostly in the first year), all students in the year will be taught at the same time; however in some lessons such as the workshop lessons, the year will be split into different groups.
In Design Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, and Electronics, we don’t have your typical lectures in this course; most of our lessons are 3 hours long with a 10-20 minute break and all lessons are practical or have a practical element to it. The only exception to this is the guest lectures where a professional in a specific field is invited to come and talk to the students. Courses such as Design engineering will also have more practical lessons.
Depending on the specific subject you choose, there will be no exams, however there are various assessments and projects that you will have for each course; although some may include a Viba (like an oral exam)
Most probably not. Most of the books you will need will have an electronic version which will be free for you to access; any hard copies will either be given straight to you or will be available from the library. All software will be free for you to download and any hardware will be provided by the university. However, for some subject like Product design, there will be some materials and hardware you would have to buy for yourself for certain projects.
You will most likely not have timetabled lessons for every day, but you will most likely need to be in uni every day to do work, use the equipment and meet with your team members.
The only course that requires an interview is BSc/BA Product Design
Yes. There is a certain amount of money given to every student or team for every project that you are set, however sometimes you may need to buy your own materials (such as certain paints or other extras that are not necessary for your project). You can also ask staff members to order things for you, however it is down to their discretion.
Middlesex have many industrial standard facilities that are available for student use, such as the specialist Robotics labs, Mechatronics labs, Electronics labs, several Laser Cutters, several 3D Printers, wood workshop, metal workshop, plastic workshop and a material workshop.
There are many members of staff such as GTA (Graduate Teaching Assistants), SLAs (Student Learning Assistants), Technical Tutors and lecturers that are around that will be available to help you out and answer any questions that you may have. They are usually willing to help you out but it always helps to have done some previous research, to have tried to understand the question or task you many need help with, and to ask specific questions. There is also other support such as Essay writing, Report writing and Mathematics help that you will have available to you.
1) Make sure you attend all of your lessons! All of the lessons are practical lessons and so if you miss out on the lesson, it is very hard to catch up on what you missed because nothing can really replace a lecturer speaking in detail about the different subjects, giving examples, answering your questions and the experience you gain from trying things out in the class.
2) I would also say that it is very important to make sure that you start your work straight away, don’t leave it till the last minute as time WILL catch up with you. Set a personal deadline for yourself and be prepared for things to not go to plan as this is what often happens with engineering; we spend a major part of our time troubleshooting and making things better.
3) Document all the projects you do nicely, videos and pictures are so useful when explaining your projects and showing off your skills set to future employers and business partners.
4) Do a placement/internship/work experience. Placements give you an experience in the real world and they look great on your CV. Although in your first and second year, you may not get a very technical placement or get to do many technical things on your placement, but these will set you up for better placements in the future. Also try to get placements in different types of companies so that you can get a feel for the different job opportunities out there. Even if you don’t get the chance to do a placement year, every little bit of experience helps, whether it’s just a few weeks or a couple of months, all experience is good.

Hi! I'm in year 12 now and would love to do Design Engineering at uni! i love being creative and engineering. so i was thinking of getting work experience in a design studio this summer, but I'm clueless on where i should look 
i tried online but i can't find anything on it, at least for people my age (or maybe I'm looking at the wrong place idk) I don't know people in the industry personally as well Do you mind if I ask whether you know of any design companies that might do it?? And also, is the competition really high for design engineering like it is for some of the other engineering degrees?

When I was in year 12, I did work experience in a Civil Engineering Company, luckily I had links to them from one of my teachers. Wherever you do manage to find work experience in, the most important thing is to figure out what you've learned from your time there and what kind of transferable skills/knowledge/insight you gained.
I'm not quite sure where you live, so I don't know whether all of these links will be useful for you. You might find it easier to just find a list of companies that are around your area and just email all of them. Not all companies advertise that they do work experience.

Hey Guys!
So last week was quite a busy week for me. I'm currently preparing for the Skills Show - UK Finals - Mobile Robotics Competition for the 17th - 19th Nov 2016 in Birmingham, so most of my spare time has been spent working on the robot.
Most of the other courses here at MDX are on reading week, however because all of our lessons are practical, we don't get a reading week. This isn't that bad though, as it means the uni campus is quieter and there isn't such a big rush around lunch time =)
My lessons have been going good, we've been working through past years assessments in the Mechatronics lessons which have proved to be quite hard, but like anything, once you've learned the technique, then it stops being hard. Having said that though, the tasks did take a good few hours to solve though. We've also been learning how to connect over wifi to a mobile robot called a Turtlebot using a programming language called Python.
My weekend was really busy, as we had a special meeting at my church where all the different Salem Christian Societies in the different Uni's around the country came together, which was super fun and very inspiring.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure how competitive the courses are. I do know for my subject specifically, there have been a larger intake of students into the course. When I started the course, it was still quite new so there was only 20 students accepted, but this year and the last year they accepted about 70 students.
I would say however, not to let the competitiveness of a course put you off applying. If you think you would like to study a particular subject at a particular uni then apply, you never know what will happen. And if worse comes to worst, then you can always go through clearing which isn't necessarily a bad way into university. I have met many people who have ended up at MDX through clearing and have loved it and realised that this was actually the best place for them.

Hi Guys!
So last week I travelled up to Birmingham for the WorldSkills UK - Robotics National Final Competition, I am happy to announce that I got a SILVER MEDAL!!!
As soon as I got back to London, I had to start working on my first submission since I came back to uni after my placement year. It was a little nerve racking as it was different from submitting my work to my supervisor while at work, especially as this definitely counts towards my final grade! But I managed to finish on time which was good.
I also did a photo-shoot with the university for the Science and Technology brochures and website, which was fun. Look out for my face in the next couple of years on the billboards, websites and brochures.
I have also been working towards a concert that my church is having this Saturday where the Salem MDX choir will be performing at, hopefully it will be good!

Hello Everyone =D
This week I had an oral exam (called a Viva) to go with the Mechatronics assessment I had the week before. My lecturers asked me questions regarding my project and asked me to explain certain things. I have also been trying to do my mobile robotics work which involves mapping a chosen part of the new building, unfortunately there was one issue or another either the robot didn’t work, or there was something wrong with my computer, so it’s been taking longer than I had hoped it would. Thankfully, the lecturer in charge of this module has been really helpful and has been helping to work the issues out.
The concert Salem MDX were working towards was a great success, it was soooooo fun! The performance we did was really good as well! We are also planning towards our final service which will be a Christmas Social next week Thursday.

Merry Christmas in advanced!!!!!
I do love uni, but I am SOOO glad to be back home with my family for the holidays. My parents don't live very far, but I don't see them all the time so it's nice to catch up with them. I tried to get as much work done as possible before I left my uni house, but I didn't get as much done as I had hoped to. I have decided to take a purposeful break for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Quick tip:
Christmas holidays although is technically a holiday, as uni students shouldn't be seen as a holiday, it's a time to DO WORK. So often people go off on the Christmas holidays (myself included) and don't do work, then regret it after the holidays, and it happens every year! LOL!
Learn from my mistakes people, please! Get the work done before you travel back home, then chill over the holidays. If you don't finish the work, make sure you make time for the work.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
My last week of the Christmas Break.....I wish it was longer!!!!
Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too great over the past week, so I didn't manage to do much work, and I didn't do all the friend and family visits I had hoped to make during the holidays so I have to try to squeeze as much as i can into this last week of "freedom".
Living away from home can be great, but when you go back home and all your friends and family are around, you realise how much you're missing out on and you realise how many people you've missed, which is definitely something that's happened to me this holiday. My God children have grown up so big and I realised that I've missed such a big part of their lives being away for uni, but at the end of the day, I know that I have the struggle I'm dealing with now will be worth it. My plan after uni is to move back home and honestly, I can't wait, as I get to see everyone again, and be back in my home area.
But that's enough dreaming and reminiscing, I have to get back to doing my work. Based on the amount of work I have done so far, I foresee very many all-night-er's this week.....*sigh*

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
My last week of the Christmas Break.....I wish it was longer!!!!
Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too great over the past week, so I didn't manage to do much work, and I didn't do all the friend and family visits I had hoped to make during the holidays so I have to try to squeeze as much as i can into this last week of "freedom".

Hi Guys!
This is the 2nd week of 2017 and it's time to get back into the swing of Uni!
This week has been quite intense as I've got 2 assignments due in and 2 assessments/presentations. So far I've handed in one of the assignments already as it was due in on Tuesday evening, in preparation for the assessment part this afternoon.
I've had one of the assessments already this morning and it went really well! The questions were quite easy as I had prepared and read quite a lot of the documentation around the subject area last night. One thing I can say, preparation really does pay off! I had asked some of my classmates that had done the assessment before me, what kind of questions came up so that I had an idea of what to read about. I even Google'd the answer to one of the questions in the morning on my way to uni!
Woooh! I am actually BUZZING right now! I am so relieved that assessment is over! It's been hanging over my head for more than 2 months, and it was all over in a matter of minutes! Fantastic!
This is also the first week back for the Salem MDX team, so the leaders have been meeting several times this week to sit and plan things for the year before we start things properly next week. We've got quite a few events in mind so this year is going to be quite busy! I can't wait though, it’s all pretty exciting!!!
I am really tired and want to go home and sleep, but I don't think that would be a good idea as I do still have quite a lot of work to do and I have my last assessment for the week in a few hours so I need to make sure I’ve prepped for that. =/
Well, back to my assessment prep I go!

We had our first 2 Final year project lessons! That means I'm on the final push!
I still have a lot of work that is due in this month from the old modules, but we are also expected to start working on and submitting stuff for our final year project!

I hope you've all had a more relaxed week than I did!
This week was extremely busy! We had the offer holder reception happening which we had to prepare for and attend, I have my Salem duties to do, my band had our first rehearsal/meeting of the year, I had a performance this Saturday with my brother, it was my friends birthday on Wednesday and then I also have 2 submissions due in by tomorrow!!! In the past 4 days hours I've slept for about 10 hours! Next week is looking quite busy too but hopefully not as busy as this one!
I also just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone that was able to make it out on Thursday, I hope you all found it useful and it was lovely meeting you! Hopefully I'll get a chance to see more of you, as well as everyone that wasn't able to make it out, (I know some of you wanted to come). If you weren't able to make it or just have more questions not to fret, there are a few applicant days coming up in February and March, so keep an on your emails for those!
