Argument against parents not allowing children to use computers.

Many parents and teachers feel that children should not be spending much time and energy on computers. They argue that the internet is dangerous because the child does not have the skills to handle sexual predators and cyber bullies and pornography and extremist propaganda online. They argue that a child should be studying traditional subjects in the way that they themselves once studied, and not allow modern technology to tempt them into addiction and passive entertainment. They see computers as a waste of time and the idea of doing creative arts online as ridiculous and unnecessary.

How can we argue against the above mentioned with evidence?

There is so much research and evidence suggesting that the use of the internet and online gaming actually increases social skills and feelings of isolation. People who are, in reality, introverts can communicate with ease online, and has been found to decrease mental health issues. Being able to communicate with others that have similar interests and beliefs allows an individual to feel a sense of belonging, which can be a concern for radicalisation... however that is relatively rare in comparison to the amount of innocent groups of individuals just seeking people to connect with. Of course, there is also much research contradicting these points. It has also been found to increase problem solving skills- which helps academically. With the internet providing us with access to immediate information, it seems almost ridiculous that teachers would suggest it is a waste of time.
