Can you apply for more than one PhD at the same place?

You are allowed but depts can be very small and people may talk to each other and find out. Unless the projects are in the same lab or with the same supervisor it would look bad as you can't really say you're committed to one project when you've applied for another and they can see that.

I believe you can apply to whatever you like, whether it would be wise to is another question.

If the topics are very similar it's highly likely that they're involved in each other's work and collaborate so they definitely will find out. Maybe check through their webpages to see if they work together or have published together and then email and let them know that you're interested in both projects and go from there.

As @alleycat393 suggests, supervisors do talk to one another, you know. It's all quite incestuous. It's going to look pretty bad if you've waxed lyrical about how committed and enthusiastic you are about two different projects, even if they are related. It looks disingenuous.

okay but i mean the topics are very similar.
surely noone applies to only one phd at one university, the topics vary slightly at different unis for a start, no phds are exactly the same, so if you apply to different unis you are already doing this, so how can it matter if it's at the same uni?

no student's going to apply to just one uni, everyone has a plan b and a plan a?

Probably not, but contact the Supervisor and ask an intelligent question re the difference between the two. Hopefully, within their answer you will get some clues as to why and how they see them as different and incompatible for simultaneous applications, or how they view them as similar and that people might apply to both...
