Not sure why its odd?

They are expensive pets/possessions and he doesnt want to risk them in the hold. He has lots of money and can afford to book out the plane.
The hold can be subject to significant temperature variations and he would not be happy if they all died. Accidents happen.

A touch disingenuous. The hold is no more at risk to significant temperature variations than the cabin is and is regularly used to transport animals.
An accident is no more likely there than it is in the main passenger cabin.
