They over offer in all subjects, but much more so for maths. And yes, because of STEP.

Most Cambridge mathmo did not get to BMO2, but most (almost all) BMO2 qualifiers end up reading maths at Cambridge. Doing well in BMO definitely helps you get in to cambridge. Most of BMO people can deal with STEP papers easily.

I doubt many who could get to the BMO wouldn't receive an interview. Those who aren't interviewed for maths generally have (a) module score(s) which suggests that they are nowhere near the level required for the course - say, 85% in an AS core module like C1 or C2. Even then the college may give them the benefit of the doubt and invite them for interview anyway.
