'Poshest' universities in the UK revealed

Interesting story on the BBC today:

Cambridge University now has fewer privately educated students than universities such as Bristol, Durham and St Andrews, entry figures reveal.

Cambridge has only the ninth most privately educated intake, the Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show.

Among mainstream universities, Oxford has the fewest state school pupils. The figures show the overall proportion of state school pupils entering UK universities has reached a record high.

So, more state students that ever before getting into university. How much do you think it matters? Should universities have a responsibility to limit the number of privately educated students they admit?

Oh - and the top 10 unis with the lowest proportion of state-educated students...

Royal Agricultural University 49.1%

3.

Courtauld Institute of Art 55.3%

4.

Oxford 55.7%

5.

I found it depressing that some major arts institutions are still regularly appearing in these lists. Nothing seems to change.

No. I think the current system is better where you better appreciate high grades from poor schools.

E.g. You have two students with the same academic profile. One is privately educated and one is state. So you pick the latter. :smile:

Read any TSR thread and you will soon realise how wrong you are. There is a perfect 1:1 relationship between private/public school and intrinsic poshness. Says the folks wot hangs around these parts. Don't ya know.

At one point I remember York Uni had the largest percentage of students who would identify as a 'Rah' - something to do with dressing like a middle-class posh boy. Considering York Uni is made of concrete lego blocks, these posh students would really make a starking contrast walking through it. York university is just terrible.

Those unis aren't 'posh' because loads of private schoolers go there. Those unis are 'posh' because they have established and exceptional reputations, are quite/very old and (most) have surroundings and buildings steeped with history.

Those characteristics attract private schoolers...

ie posh people are least likely to mix with people who aren't also posh. Isolation and echo chamber social interactions are bad for individuals and society. If universities are perpetuating this social isolation then they aren't fulfilling their purposes to improve society and the students they recruit.
