'Poshest' universities in the UK revealed

Interesting story on the BBC today:

BBC News
Cambridge University now has fewer privately educated students than universities such as Bristol, Durham and St Andrews, entry figures reveal.

Cambridge has only the ninth most privately educated intake, the Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show.

Among mainstream universities, Oxford has the fewest state school pupils. The figures show the overall proportion of state school pupils entering UK universities has reached a record high.

So, more state students that ever before getting into university. How much do you think it matters? Should universities have a responsibility to limit the number of privately educated students they admit?

Oh - and the top 10 unis with the lowest proportion of state-educated students...

1.

Royal Academy of Music 48.5%

2.

Royal Agricultural University 49.1%

3.

Courtauld Institute of Art 55.3%

4.

Oxford 55.7%

5.

St Andrews 56.7%

I found it depressing that some major arts institutions are still regularly appearing in these lists. Nothing seems to change.

Just because they have a relatively high intake of private schoolers, does not constitute as to how posh they are ffs...

No. I think the current system is better where you better appreciate high grades from poor schools.

E.g. You have two students with the same academic profile. One is privately educated and one is state. So you pick the latter.

Read any TSR thread and you will soon realise how wrong you are. There is a perfect 1:1 relationship between private/public school and intrinsic poshness. Says the folks wot hangs around these parts. Don't ya know.

Well.... it is a pretty good proxy tho.

TSR had a chat about this already. Actually TSR often has a chat about this but this one was quite interesting:

At one point I remember York Uni had the largest percentage of students who would identify as a 'Rah' - something to do with dressing like a middle-class posh boy. Considering York Uni is made of concrete lego blocks, these posh students would really make a starking contrast walking through it. York university is just terrible.
Bristol is quite posh I have to say.

Those unis aren't 'posh' because loads of private schoolers go there. Those unis are 'posh' because they have established and exceptional reputations, are quite/very old and (most) have surroundings and buildings steeped with history.

Those characteristics attract private schoolers...

"How integrated are we by social grade?
"The average person living in Britain has 14 per cent fewer interactions with people of different social grades than would be expected if there was no social segregation. Some social grades are more segregated than others. Overall, social grades A and B are the least integrated, with 19 per cent fewer social interactions with those of other social grades than if there was no social segregation, closely followed by social grade D, with 17 per cent fewer"
"This limited level of social integration of social group A suggests that there may be significant gaps within their networks. This may hinder the ability of employers to access a wide talent pool and may also limit access to jobs for people from lower social grades. This also raises significant questions about how social integration may affect access to work in a nation where around 40 per cent of jobs are found through personal contacts, and whether the solidarity required to support the welfare state can be maintained."
http://socialintegrationcommission.org.uk/SIC_Report_WEB.pdf

ie posh people are least likely to mix with people who aren't also posh. Isolation and echo chamber social interactions are bad for individuals and society. If universities are perpetuating this social isolation then they aren't fulfilling their purposes to improve society and the students they recruit.

You do know "pretty" universities have (many) "ugly" buildings too?
