Donald trump pick for EU ambassador - euroskeptic Ted Malloch

The European parliament’s main political parties are making an unprecedented attempt to block Donald Trump’s likely choice as ambassador to the European Union from EU buildings, describing him as hostile and malevolent.

In a startling move that threatens a major diplomatic row, the leaders of the conservative, socialist and liberal groups in Brussels have written to the European commission and the European council, whose members represent the 28 EU states, to reject the appointment of Ted Malloch.

Malloch, a businessman who stridently supported Brexit ahead of the vote in June, is said to have been interviewed for the post by Trump.

When recently asked by the BBC why he was interested in moving to Brussels, Malloch replied: “I had in a previous career a diplomatic post where I helped bring down the Soviet Union. So maybe there’s another union that needs a little taming.”

He also said that Trump was not a fan of the EU, described it as “supranational and unelected” and attacked the European commission’s president, Jean-Claude Juncker. “Mr Juncker was a very adequate mayor I think of some city in Luxembourg, and maybe he should go back and do that again,” he said.

Manfred Weber, leader of the centre-right EPP and an ally of the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and Guy Verhofstadt, who leads the liberal ALDE group, accused Malloch of “outrageous malevolence” towards “the values that define this European Union”.

In a letter seen by the Guardian, Weber and Verhofstadt address Juncker and the president of the European council, Donald Tusk: “In the past weeks, Ted R. Malloch, the likely nominee by US President Trump to become the new US ambassador to the European Union, made a series of public statements denigrating the EU.

“In these statements, the prospective nominee expressed his ambition to ‘tame the bloc like he brought down the Soviet Union’, eloquently supported dissolution of the European Union and explicitly bet on the demise of the common currency within months.

“These statements reveal outrageous malevolence regarding the values that define this European Union and, if pronounced by an official representative of the United States, they would have the potential to undermine seriously the transatlantic relationship that has, for the past 70 years, essentially contributed to peace, stability and prosperity on our continent.”

jesus christ seriously??? comparing the EU to the USSR
It will make for exciting times. He can appoint who he likes. If the US doesnt like the EU then they can stop engaging with it and possibly have a trade war Up to them. Although the US is powerful I think there is a limit to which the EU will be pushed about. Wait and see.

But the EU (goodness knows what organ of the EU) doesn't have to accept him.

Is there a formal acceptance procedure or do you mean they dont have to co operate?

I have to say that I was amazed to see that the Papal Nuncio is Doyen of the diplomatic corps of the EU. That is normally the case in states where Roman Catholicism is the established Church, but in other states (including the UK), the longest serving ambassador usually takes precedence.

I've heard this cited as one of the justifications for the conspiratorial view that the EU is an extension of Vatican plotting and long established European aristocratic manoeuvring - it does rather stick out. Then there's the Treaty of Rome. The Pope speaking to the EU Parliament and being denounced by Paisley as the 'Antichrist' in a loud, hectoring manner and being ejected. The evidence is just overwhelming.

Malloch has been on the Daily Politics and This week a few times and i have to say that i quite like the guy. I don't entirely agree with his views but he expresses the thoughts of Trump clearly and i tend to believe that the US should choose whoever they wish.

In an interview on Radio 4 last night he just claimed it was intended as a witticism.

The real thing to know about him is that he's an arch neoliberal and one of the key people who was instrumental in turning Russia (and attempting to turn E. Europe) into a basket case 'marvellous example' of extreme libertarian capitalism, with disastrous consequences that led to Putin's authoritarian rule and Russia effectively excluded from what could have been a full and healthy participation in the modern world.

The suspicion must be that his placement in the EU is to do with imposing a bigger dose of extremist neoliberalism and austerity. My guess is that he's there to carry out some revised, secretive version of the TTIP with even more powers to the financial corporations and the destruction of European public services.

Is there a precedent for anyone being refused? I dont really care whether they accept him or not. It will be interesting to observe how he manages a constrcutive relationship with the EU if he wishes to disband it or alternatively how the US will react if he is rejected. Unsurprisingly it seems Donald likes to get his way and if not he threatens sanctions or a trade war. Will he have time to have a trade war with Mexico and China?? Will relations be so poor he starts threatening one with the EU as well?

Perhaps he and Farage can get together to determine the fate of Europe - a sort of new Yalta? They can invite all their fellow far-righties along, Bannon will be there, the KKK field officer for Brussels, Wilders, Le Pen...

Forward with the North European Union. With the Archbish of Canterbury as Doyen, naturally.

One only tends to know if someone in post is declared persona non grata unless the receiving party makes it public (as Iran did in rejecting David Reddaway as British ambassador). I think the EU may have slung the Syrian Ambassador out in 2012 but he was already in post.
