Is there any update on whether ELQ exemption for part time study will be extended beyond the short list of STEM subjects currently covered?

And can you explain which subjects are currently exempt from ELQ rules?

Also we had a student asking about applying for a Advanced learner loan for full time FE study while also applying for a part time HE loan to cover Open University modules - is there a policy on whether a student could claim from two systems at once? what if the student was studying both routes part time?

Hi Ben344,

Students studying PT can apply for tuition fees however a loan for living costs is not available.

Tuition fees for public universities are capped at £6750 and a tuition fee loan is available to cover this amount.

Students studying at private universities can apply for tuition fee loan up to £4500. As there is no cap on the tuition fees that can be charged by private universities, students would need to self fund any remaining amount.

At the moment the ELQ exemption for PT study remains the same.

The Exemption subjects that form the ELQ rule are;

Engineering

Computer Science

Technologies

As far as studying both an Open University course and Advanced Learner Loan course simultaneously, as far as I am aware this is possible.

For more information on Advanced Learner Loans the student can contact 0300 100 0619.

I am in full time work, I'm 32 and looking at doing a undergrad Physics degree essentially. I have just sent of my details for a government loan to help with fees. I have just received a letter asking for my passport which is fine. However....it states that 'we need your passport as this will help us decide what you're entitled to'
I presumed applying for help was that I was going to get 100% towards the cost of the course? Was this wrong of me to presume this? I've always lived in England etc and fall into all their criteria......will their be a chance that I could be refused the loan completely or that they will pay half for example? It never really crossed my mind:-s

Previous full time study where there was no qualification gained would not be taken in to account when assessing for part time study.

If a qualification was gained, then this would come under the Existing Qualification Rules unless you are looking to study at a higher level than the qualification that was gained.

I'm struggling during my final year due to home circumstances, rather than leave my tutor has suggested I switch to parttime study from full time for my final year of university (over 2 years instead of 1). I have one daughter and currently recieve a childcare grant for nursery fees (the grant doesn't cover all of them as she's there full time due to me working also) so I supplement the cost of them with my loan also. I went onto student finance calculator and it said I'd only be eligible for fees of upto £6,250and nothing else. Has anyone been through this and can let me know if they still recieved student finance loans/grants? I would have to leave university otherwise.

Hi Ultrarunnerlee,

Your ID and residency details are required to confirm your eligibility to receive funding.

Providing that your course is eligible for funding, there is a Tuition Fee Loan available for £6750 which would cover 100% of the fees at a public university.

If you are changing to PT study from FT then it would only be the Part Time Tuition Fee up to £6750 that would be available.

Unfortunately, PT students are not eligible to apply for grants such as the childcare grant.
