MSc Space Systems Engineering at Southampton

I have a place in October for MSc Space Systems Engineering but hesitant to take it since it costs a small fortune and may not be worth it in the long run for this industry sector. If you are due to be on this course or have done this course then I assume you have the same interests as me, so can you please give share your thoughts on it?

I understand Cranfield University to be the better degree course (as viewed by the industry) but curious what people think about this too.

I get the impression if you're interested in research (e.g. PhD/EngD and onwards) then Southampton is preferable, otherwise it doesn't make a huge difference for industry as long as you have AN MSc from somewhere in the relevant area.

Hey Davidswift9, I just received an offer for the MSc in Space Systems engineering. Perhaps you could share your experience over the last couple of months. Is the program good for going into industry? Should one consider rather Cranfield? The fees at Southampton are quite expensive, how did you manage to fund yourself?

Hi KaleWale,

I thought I should respond as you mentioned Cranfield University here! I am a current student of Cranfield Uni, working on my PhD in Aerospace. I should be able to help you with questions relating to Cranfield. I got into Cranfield a couple of years ago and it has been one of my best life-decisions. Any question, please ask away.

Best,
Oke.

Hi Oke,
I have applied to Cranfield, but am still waiting a response, for MSc in Aerospace vehicle design, and MSc astronautics and space engineering.
Perhaps you could share your thoughts on the two programs?
Specifically, which program would offer better work opportunities. The astronautics program seems quite broad/general and I would think there are fewer career opportunities when compared to the aerospace program.

Thanks

Hi KaleWale,

Good luck with your application!
My thoughts on the two programs- as a PhD student in Aerospace, I might lean towards the Aerospace Vehicle Design program, but again this is my preference. The two programs are excellent, specialist programs; your choice will depend on your passion and perhaps your motivation. It would not depend on career opportunities as, I can tell you that most of our students get an offer/ research position well before their graduation. Of course, this is after you have put in the work in your course.

Perhaps you may want to look at the market? The Aerospace Vehicle Design has application within the Aerospace Industry and Astronautics, while the Astronautics and Space Engineering finds its primary application within that industry hence, arguably narrower. The aerospace program, has design elements which has application within the motor vehicle industry as well. You might want to consider this too and, as I mentioned, where your passion lies.

I actually ended up choosing Southampton and I absolutely regret it. I will not post my experiences on here because it is so awful that I think it maybe deleted by a forum moderator. Needless to say, I now know that Surrey University is the place to study and is respected by employers, Cranfield is second and Southampton doesn't feature on the list.

If you ever wanted information on the Southampton content and teaching then message me - it will be all negative.

Hey Davidswift9,
I'm considering on taking Msc Advanced mechanical engineering (either Engineering materials or computational engineering design) with interest in working at aerospace and space industry.

If you don't mind could you tell me more about the Southampton university and why you felt Surrey university was better for space engineering course?
I can't seem to find that many feedback and reviews for msc programs for these unis.

It's the quality of lecturers. Surrey university has direct access to the staff and Surrey space and Surrey satellite (SSTL). Southampton university did not have engineers, they had lecturers who had never left university and actually worked as an engineer - it really makes a difference and looking back I'm embarrassed I didn't say anything at the time, but I didn't know better - the course quality was poor. The company I work at now has felow engineers that are way above what I experienced from Southampton university lecturers and it shouldnt be like that, the university should have high calibre lecturers.

If you can get hold of course notes from uni Southampton and Surrey, you will see a massive difference in the quality.

I actually went through my course notes a few months back, it's like looking at school presentations.

Hey David,
I look forward to study aerospace engineering in the UK - from Germany. I try to find a course with as much spacecraft/orbital engineering in it as possible, Southampton is really attractive with its Astronautics and Spacecraft course but your post really unsettled me now!
How is Surrey about the Space-related lectures?

Hi Becca,
Sorry I totally missed your reply. Regarding your offer( if still available), I am curious about Msc space engineering course and would like to know if I can also undertake dissertation on topics: FEA simulation on spacecraft structures using CAD/CAM softwares.

I am asking this since the modules of the Msc course seem to cover very little aspect of FEA topics and CAD simulations which could be a major factor for my dissertation that I wish to undertake.

Hi there

I recommend for you to contact Prof Aglietti, the programme leader for Msc Space Engineering. He should be able to answer your questions about the dissertation topics. Here is the link to see more information about the programme leader and an email in the top right hand corner for you contact: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/people/guglielmo-aglietti. If you also would like to see more about the Msc Space Engineering please see this link if you haven't already: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/postgraduate/space-engineering-msc

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Becca
