How does one define front/middle/back office. I mean are things like Private Banking, Wealth Management etc Front Office?

Is working in Middle Office good or bad and does it allow one to move on into Front Office?

front - makes money
middle - mitigates against risks, manages the bank's balance sheet, sets corporate strategy, technology directly pertaining to FO
back - processing (Ops), corporate roles, general technology

it handles the banks balance sheet, it's a MO function, I'd assume within finance

Depends, they will have some rates traders as part of team (who actually execute the strategies for balance sheet management), Also depends on the role description for the job though and the structure of the team. Different Banks structure their ALM teams slightly differently from what I can tell.
