Hey, I'm not an American but I'm curious, why did you decide to study in the UK?

HI! My name is Tori and I'm from Daytona Beach, FL, USA! I am applying to study BSc Maths and/with Statistics in the UK, starting this fall!

I have applied to Southampton, Kent, Newcastle, Queen Mary, and Sheffield. So far, I have gotten one unconditional offer from Southampton and two conditional offers from Kent and Newcastle. I am still waiting to hear back from Queen Mary. Unfortunately, Sheffield did not offer me a place :frown:

I am currently strongly leaning towards Southampton, with Kent as a close second.

If you are from the USA and are also applying to study in the UK, I would love to chat with you

Not American but tagging an American applicant to the UK in here in, if she wants to chat  @rissanicole14

I am an international applicant who is familiar with the American system but I am not American. What APs did you take? and SAT 2s if you took any? I took SAT 2 Biology and US History.

Congratulations on your offers  Unfortunately, the only thing that I know about Daytona Beach, Florida is NASCAR  nothing else really. When you say a "local uni" that has a reputable maths program, I assume it's UCF or University of Florida? cuz FSU and UMiami are a bit too far and New College Florida is not that great for maths? I may be wrong though :/ didn't really research unis in Florida  Out of state/International tuition in the US is too expensive :/ in state tuition is too expensive as well imo which is why I chose not to apply to the US.

Glad to see more Americans on here

Hi!

Congratulations on your offers, that’s a very good choice of universities. If you have any questions about your offer to Newcastle or want to know more about our Maths/Stats courses, let us know, we'll be happy to help. Bring some of that Florida sunshine when you come over to the UK, if you wouldn't mind

Ethan
It's a shame that you'd want to leave America just as Trump is coming in to make it great again.

I actually only took one AP test that was on my application, which was Psychology (I got a 3 in the exam). I also had my ACT scores (27 composite), High School Diploma (4.3 GPA), and Associate of Arts Degree (3.7 GPA). In terms of the application, a US Associate's Degree (2 years) is equivalent to A-levels.

Thank you! Have you received any offers as of yet? Everyone says the same thing about Daytona, so I'm quite used to hearing it  I was actually referring to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University here in Daytona, but both UCF and UF are also great schools! Unfortunately, both of those are still 1-2 hours away from me, so moving would be necessary. I actually spent a semester out at UCF taking some Comp Sci courses; it's a great campus with very intelligent professors and so much to do! It wasn't a good fit for me, though, so I returned home and continued studying at a local state college to finish my Associate's.

Tuition is ridiculous here, regardless of where you go! Two-year state colleges aren't bad for cost, but the names aren't well-known and you don't get the true "uni experience". The other way they get you (regardless of where you attend) is textbooks: I've spent nearly $1,000 in just one semester for 4 books! The sad part is some of them weren't even new books. From what I understand, it isn't like that in the UK. Another great money saver

Damn 4.3 GPA out of high school  amazing! I've never heard of an Associate's Degree (Community College?), the more you know

Yep, Offers from St Andrews, UCL, and Exeter, Rejection from Oxford :/, waiting on Manchester. Oooh I didn't know Embry-Riddle was in Florida :/ thought it was in Houston or something (I guess it makes sense cuz NASA has a base in Cape Carnaveral I think) Cool  yep both are great unis

Yep, I heard it was easier to borrow textbooks in the UK compared to the US. Tuition plus accomodation plus living expenses add up to some cases $75,000 in money spent per year (private "elite" unis)... it's insane

Why maths?

Yes, an Associate's Degree is basically your first two years of university here in the US.

Congratulations on your offers so far! Embry-Riddle has two campuses if I recall correctly: One in Florida and one in Arizona. I think they also have an online "school" as well. There is indeed Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida

The cost of higher education in the United States is ridiculous. I was actually having this conversation with my parents. It's going to cost me about $90,000 to attend uni in the UK, but its still much less than the cost to attend many universities here in the US. You can't win, really. To get a degree from a reputable uni, you also need to be willing to take on some debt.

I just realized that I forgot to answer your last question! I chose maths and statistics for many different reasons. First is that feeling you get when you know you've found something you enjoy...for me, when I can tackle a difficult problem, it gives me this amazing feeling that I just figured this out and I understand the reasons why the answer is what it is! I've always been good with numbers and logic since I was very young.

Secondly, I love all the real-world connections you can make with maths, especially to things like medicine, aeronautics, and computer science. I've enjoyed courses I've taken in psychology and computer science in addition to maths because I get to use maths concepts to solve a real-world problem or create something new.

Finally, the skills you learn during a maths/logic-heavy course can help you in pretty much any job. Because of this, I believe that this degree will be more valuable to me than others I considered during high school.

Cool  The more you know!

Thank you! That's pretty cool  can students move between campus each school year? Cuz that would be cool.

At any rate, I hope the next secretary of education looks into how much money it costs gor a student to go into higher education in the United States... it's quite absurd. (If it is Betsy DeVos the likelihood of it actually happening is 0 but anyways) $90,000 for all 3-4 years? That's honestly way better than some private unis in the US...

You've really thought this out  that's good :yep: definitely have better reasons about why you want to take your coirse compared to my reasons which is mostly intellectual curiosity more than anything else. What majors did you consider out of high school?

Yeah, it would definitely be expensive :/

Hahaha Betsy DeVos doesn't know what she is talking about... even some Republicans that I know agree with that. Indeed, I hope they will as well but with this government not sure that will happen... hopefully something will happen though to alleviate this issue.

Funny you say that... I have many friends who are choosing random subjects as well just for career prospects and such, like I know a guy who chose to major in applied maths just because he doesn't have the grades to get into an elite institution for engineering... like applied maths is any easier to get into... he plans to switch courses in second year.

That's good  you found what you enjoyed! although it took a bit longer  I enjoy film production and journalism but I don't think I can make a career out of that  Yeah sometimes in life, you never know where paths will lead  and now you are planning to cross the pond to study which is a wise financial investment in a subject that you love  life works out!

That's honestly part of the reason I like the American higher education system to a certain extent. You don't have to really choose your focus right away; you get a year or two of general education courses before you specialise. It also sucks, though, because if you're very passionate about the subject you focus in, you get less depth of knowledge with a US degree. I guess that's why I like that I did what I did in regards to university: I got the breadth with my American Associate's degree, and I'll get the depth in maths and statistics with my UK Bachelor's. If nothing else, I can argue in a job interview in the future that I got the best of both worlds.

I'm very happy I stumbled across this website; it's really nice to talk with everyone and get to know other students from all over the world! I'm hoping uni will be like this because I would love the chance to become friends with a diverse group of people. I think it would be interesting to learn the differences between cultures. Also, since I love food, I would totally love to do some sort of food event where the international (and UK) students can all bring a dish from their home country/region for everyone to try. I think even with just the UK students you could get a diverse selection of food, but add the international/EU students and it would turn into a feast! I'm getting excited just thinking about it, and it'll probably never even happen :P

Yep , that is a reason why I like the American higher education system as well, you get the best of both worlds really  Hahaha this site is definitely better than College Confidential  University will definitely have diverse groups of people so I am sure there will be events like this where there is some sort of potluck party  you can arrange one as well tbh if you wish to  I think people won't be too unreceptive towards this idea.

I hope so! I've been getting really excited for uni as of late. I live in a quiet area of town, and there's not too much to do in my area. So, I'm often confined to my house which really sucks :/ I can't wait to get out there and meet new people and find fun things to do. And of course, there's decorating your room...which is going to be quite interesting for me seeing as I won't be able to bring much! Buying a new TV and new wall/AC adapters for ALL my electronics (laptop, phone, Wii U, Wii...the list goes on and I'm certainly not leaving them at home!) is probably going to be the most painful/expensive part.

Hahaha I am excited about uni as well  but I still have to take final exams :/ Yay same here, confined to my house quite a lot. Already thinking about decorating your room  xD my room at homes is tbh pretty bare so I don't really have anything to put on the walls, although at uni I'll definitely print out a couple of posters and stuff to personalise the dorm a bit

I thought there were some unis that already provide the tv :/ if not yeah buying a new TV and adapters would be hella expensive... Thinking about getting the new Nintendo Switch when it comes out tho  it looks pretty sick!

Hey Tori!,
I'm currently doing my undergrad at UF and will be applying to med schools in the UK next cycle. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who wants to make the jump!

Good luck on your exams!

As for my room at home, I have a plethora of posters and decorations. I'm a HUGE Legend of Zelda fan, so I own four limited edition posters that are all on my walls right now. Sadly, I've decided to sell them, as otherwise they would just be left to sit in a closet for 3+ years! Plus, I could really use the money!

I think there are some that do provide a TV, but unfortunately, Southampton (more than likely my first choice) does not. Between when I originally posted this and now, I've realized it'll probably be cheaper to just buy the travel converters for anything I can (laptop, phone, etc- all have the voltage requirements) and get new adapters only for the things that don't. I can't really get out of the whole TV thing, but hopefully, I'll be able to snag one for a decent price, or get one used.

Thank you

That's cool! Oh :/ are you selling them on ebay or something  I guess the money is more important atm.

Aww that sucks :/ hahaha you've really been thinking about this a lot  maybe try to get a tv on sale or a "Black Friday" (Know Black Friday is over) Sale (or Cyber Tuesday for that matter)

Yes, I am  I've actually been selling quite a bit of stuff. I've been interested in getting rid of a bit of my clutter anyways, and since I'm planning to move with limited suitcase space, I think now is as good a time as any!

I was hoping to look around before I start uni, or even over the summer. If I found any good deals, I could always have it shipped to my boyfriend's house (or have him go get it for that matter). Having someone who lives in the UK already makes things just a bit easier for me.

Definitely! I probably need to get rid of a bunch of clutter as well before uni. Yeah having somebody already in the UK definitely makes things a lot easier, especially in terms of packing and sending goods.

Hey Tori! Sorry, I haven't been on TSR for a while  awesome to see other yanks that also see the benefits of a UK degree! And for similar reasons, like money/depth of study/getting out of a state that people think are great but you're sick of it (I'm a Cali girl )

Did you graduate high school, do two years of cc and then decide to transfer to a UK uni? Or do some kind of concurrent enrollment thing? I didn't get into my dream uni in the UK the first time around so I'm thinking of taking a similar approach.

Spoiler

Pretty worried I'm going to get rejected from the UK unis I applied to though because they asked me to send in my predicted grades by a certain day (which was about 5 days ago), and my counselor has been out on sick leave for a week :smile::smile:
