I'm a bit late, but people were wondering why mathematics applicants rose this year even though some others like economics fell. I'm very certain it was because in the year 2016 Cambridge rose to #1 position for mathematics in the top universities list, as opposed to its 2015 and 2014 positions #2 and #4 respectively.

That seems a plausible reason for the increase. Does @jneill have any idea why?
