Mature Students 2017 University Applicants

I am just curious if anyone can explain the offers. I have looked at the Acces to HE table and all credits are in batches of 15, yet some people are quoting offers with 27 credits etc. How does this work?

Hi there. Credits are given out in 3's. For one whole assignment which covers 1 unit of work you get 3 credits at either pass/merit/ distinction. So offers are given out in multiple of 3's. Eg: 33 distinctions,12 merits.

In total you will do 15 graded units of work/assignments and get a total of 45 graded credits.

A little update. I have an interview at King's College on 24th of Feb I got my instructions, as it is going to be a clinical aptitude test and something else, an hour in total. Wish me luck

I'm 33 years old and half way through an Access to HE in Humanities and Social Sciences. I applied for a BA Primary Education with QTS at MMU, Edgehill, Chester and Liverpool Hope. I also applied for a BA Primary Education with Mathematics specialism at MMU.
I had interviews and received conditional offers for all five courses before the new year.
MMU Primary Education with Maths (15 D + 30 M)
MMU Primary Education (15 D + 30 M)
Edgehill Primary Education (18 D + 27 M)
Chester Primary Education (21 D + 24 M)
Liverpool Hope Primary Education (15 D, 15 M + 15 P)

I have put MMU Primary Education with Maths as my firm choice.

So far on the course I have been graded on 7 assignments and received 21 D.

Looking forward to the challenge of university.

Hopefully see some of my fellow old gits there.

Welcome! Sounds like your Access Course is pretty organised? We've only done 4 graded assignments so far 2 of which have been marked as 2 teachers left and 1 is in hospital. And only 2 people in the year got a distinction on the first one. The management claimed this sort of thing happens for every access course so I'd be interested to hear.

Hi,

We have had no problems with staffing or marking whatsoever. We have had seven graded assignments marked. I actually have another handed in tomorrow and then a further one a week on Wednesday. So within 2 weeks we should have 9 grades units marked and have just 6 left to do. Marking wise on the course, the average mark is merit for sure. Although 3-4 normally get a distinction on each assignment.

Yeah... ive had a similar experience so far with my access course with teachers leaving, overly harsh grading, etc. Sometimes I feel like I really need to stay on top of making sure teachers are teaching right and keeping to schedule, which can be tiring!

We've had a few problems with our access course. Mainly long delays in marking and general disorganisation. We are also now on our 4th chemistry teacher.

We've so far done only 6 graded units/assignments. Just handed in the last batch so it'll be April when the next 3 go in. Distinctions don't seem to be rare. 3 to 4 people getting them each time. Mostly people getting merits though. It seems common to have to resit a few criteria, quiet a few people doing this each time. I've received marks back for 4 assignments and have received 3 distinctions and 1 merit.

Also not an issue was I'm curious, what is the boy to girl ratio? We have one boy left. We started off with 28 students, 3 of whom were male and now have 17 students, one of which is male.

I'm the only guy on my access course, but nursing is commonly female dominated so no real surprise.
But class numbers are a different story: Started with about 25 people on the course... but after loads of drop outs we're on about 7 now!

The thing is the merit was verbally graded a distinction by another teacher, then the teacher who actually marked it marked it down. He did with almost everyone and one woman he'd given a distinction too but then took it away.
Seems you both have had more assignments graded than two though and lots of people are having to resubmitting work here. They're also being strict with deadlines capping people at a pass for handing it in half a day late etc.

We started with 16 females and 6 males and now have 14 and 5.
I guess the teaching access course is similar. 7 of their class turned up on Monday for a study day and they were all females. Luckily one of them does sociology with my class so I had someone to sit with
