Opinions on University of Leicester

I have applied to Leicester university to study Psychology and sociology joint honors, I was pretty happy with this decision until I started hearing quite a lot of bad things about the university and its lecturers. I was hoping to get the opinion of some existing what are the good and bad points of the uni.

Hey,

So I've just recently graduated from the University of Leicester, where I studied psychology. Therefore I thought I could share my experiences studying at the University.

I can honesty say that I enjoyed my time at the University of Leicester, so much that I knew that I would love to get a job at the University after I'd graduated ( which I actually ended up doing!). I believe this is due to me taking the time to take part and seeing all the different things the University had to offer.

I thought the psychology course was amazing, generally because I felt it played to my strengths. Throughout the whole three years the lecturers and staff members were really helpful in making sure that I had an easy transition from Sixth Form to University with termly meet ups with my personal tutor, just to see how I was getting on and if I had any worries they were happy to help me out.

The lecturers were also helpful by being very accessible through emails, blackboard and even after lectures to answers any questions you have on their modules. I would say that the department is very proactive in listening to the our comments and acting upon them. One of the ways the department helped us out was by making some of our lectures more interactive, by using a digital platform called participoll, this was a very useful tool to engage with students as it incorporated the use of smart phone during lectures. I found this to be really useful especially during our stats lectures where the format of the questions used in participoll were very similar to how it would be during our exams.

Also with the Help desk, a scheduled period where you could get help with your practical reports and essays, I felt the department were very good in helping me out during my time in University.

Thanks for replying Antonia it really helped. I got an offer from Leicester and I think I'm going to put it as my firm but going to the applicant day before making a final decision. Another thing I was a little worried about are the accommodations that are offered, what did you think of them? Where did you stay the first year (if you don't mind me asking)?

I'm a current first year who's staying in Lasdun (the prison block) in the Oadby Student Village. Nicknames aside, it's really not as bad as people make out and it's really great to live in since it's in the centre of the student village making it easy to meet up with friends from the student village. Also, a good thing to note is that there is no single 'party animal' hall in the oadby student village. I didn't really believe this until I got here to be fair. Even if you're not a party kind of person you'll definitely meet like-minded people around the student village.

Yeah I would definitely suggest going to an UCAS Visit day, it will be a great way to have a little snippet into what it would be like to be a student at the University of Leicester.

Can I ask what you are worried about? There are different types of accommodation at Leicester to fit different individual needs.

In my first year I stayed in John Foster the Pavilions, which is located in Oadby Student Village. I thought Oadby was a lovely place to live, as it has a lot of greenery space, which was really nice to see especially in the summer term.

Student accommodation also has the benefit of having other students around, so it is nice to be in a place where you are surrounded by other people who are in a similar situation. Also RA's and the Union put on different events so that students have a chance to socialise and get to know one another.

I went tp the UCAS applicant day today and really loved the city and the university. I also had a chance to look at some of the accommodations available at odaby village, unfortunately did not get to see the city living. They were not as bad as I thought they would be, I think that's what had me worried I heard a lot of negative reviews about accommodations and being able to see them helped. In your opinion is city better than the student village or is there no difference and how are the accommodations chosen? what is the process?

Student village is better but if you put down any options that are in city living, avoid freemans and mary gee - although mary gee isn't as bad. Opal court is great if you want to be really close to uni and the city centre though but it's not in the student village though. At the same time, I didn't get any of my accommodation choices but I'm really happy about where I'm staying this year.

It's rather quiet and generally seems run down. It's aimed at postgrads more than undergrads though which would explain why it's quiet. Nixon, however, is pretty great.

I'm torn between the two. I'll be a postgrad so I want a bit of quiet but I'd like to go out too. Plus there's the cost, I'd love an en suite but for me it's the difference between actually eating food or starving!

Well Freemans and Nixon are right next to each other. As an undergrad living in Oadby I'm probably not the best to tackle your question. I guess put down both and see what you get.

I can understand that picking your accommodation choices can be a little bit difficult, so I thought I would provide you with some information about Nixon Court and Freemans Common.

if you are interested in en-suite accommodation, you will have more variety in Nixon Court, as Freemans Common only has Single bedrooms available.

if you are worried about the price of the accommodation the university's website has the prices for the different room types. If you click on the following link it will take you to the accommodation website-https://rooms.le.ac.uk/student_portal/Search
