Why isn't Child's showing up as 40 weeks ? Only 51 showing @UniofReading

Hi Sam,

Excellent news on the offer! In terms of en-suite it would depend if you want standard or premium. The best advice I would give there would be to look at your budget.
But for the standard ensuite rooms the most subscribed is often McCombie and Greenow. As they are in the Park Group halls, but also because they are small halls so there generally isn't as many rooms, they also tend to put lots of masters students in those halls. But as you are in early you probably still can apply to them. But I was in Sherfield in my first year and I really enjoyed it. They have quite a homely feel to them, because they are little more traditional, they kind of look like houses from the outside. They are just off campus but its like a 3-5 min walk to campus and 5-10 to the main buildings like the library and students union and doesn't really make any difference at all, and is the same distance as some of the halls that are on campus. Also in the same group is Benyon. They are also popular as they are a little newer than Sherfield, and situated around a lake, the year I was there Benyon was a quieter hall than Sherfield but it does change each year.

If you want a premium ensuite the most popular two are Mackinder and Childs as they quite new and modern (though all premuim rooms are), and near Park Bar which is a large social space, which has a bar, pool tables and a large screen for the sport.

In terms of allocations, I think they do it in the order you apply (kind of like first comes first served sort of thing) so if you are in the first group of applications I would expect you are more likely. Though I can't guarantee that of course, but it is logical.

I went for Mackinder in the end premium, as i heard a lot of good things about it. Really looking forward to going now! got my choice too

Oh and anyone reading this I strongly reccomend getting your accomodation done ASAP to get the most "popular" halls! I did mine in first week it was open like a right keen bean.

It's not first come first served though for accom, it says rooms aren't allocated like that. You just have the date to apply by and there's no order of time preference. @UniofReading someone linked to the unis policy earlier in this thread

. What do you mean - how do you know to got what you asked for ? You don't just mean you were able to pick it do you , as everyone can pick all accom , do you mean you have had an email saying you have actually been allocated your choice of room ? Do you already have an unconditional offer - maybe that's the difference as for anyone else you have to get the grades first then they allocate rooms to people ?

If you read my earlier post that my discussion originated from, I did say that It was an Un offer that I firmly held. Yes it isnt unless you firmly hold an uncon that you can apply and get a response yet

If I've firmed my conditional offer from Reading and applied for accommodation, how long before I hear if I've got my first accommodation preference? Will it be results day or pretty soon?

When living in halls how much would you say the living costs roughly are a week? So food, going out, travel etc.

I am currently looking into what hall to choose. I want a hall that is on campus, close to the main academic buildings but most of all i want a hall that is known for having the best social/being the most liveliest.

I am torn on what should be my first choice between Childs/Mackinder (as they are park group/en suite) or Windsor, as i have heard that the flats are the largest and the social there is really good. Was wondering if you could give a little bit more info on each of them and what would be the best choice?

Hey there! If you want a hall close to the centre of campus then one of the park group halls are a good idea. Though for social life I feel mackinder and childs are a hit or miss, you live with a few people only and chances are you might not get along with them. I am currently living in windsor and my flat has 26 people in them, plus a lot of flats hang out with each other. For social life I would definitely recommend our halls.The catered part also really helps in the social aspect, as I don't know many flats that don't eat together every day.
I am also one of windsor's JCR next year and I promise you our team will help deliver an insane fresher's and make anyone applying to windsor feel home at uni as best we can, should you be worried about that

That's cool thank you! I was wondering though, how was it sharing a bathroom? Did you ever find yourself needing to use the bathroom in the mornings/evenings and not being able to?

It's not a problem at all, we have 6 bathrooms between 26 people, theres always at least one free.thankfully.
