Birkbeck university

I'm just finishing up my first year of the Creative Writing and English Literature (Full time - 3 year) BA at Birkbeck! Let me know if you have any questions / I can help.

Hiiii! What socialising like at birkbeck as you only attend in the evening?

Well, I think that the fact it's an evening uni makes it even better for socialising as we generally just head straight to the uni's pub (The George) after lectures / seminars.

It's totally dependant on your willingness to chat within class / your class in general though. I made sure I suggested drinks immediately after lectures for the first few weeks and that kind of set the tone. I'm in a pretty sociable year and we go out every week (currently dying of a hangover) however outside of uni days we don't really do anything, we do tend to meet up before lectures though for lunch / studying etc.

Oh actually, just to add, we do go out / meet up for creative uni events like theatre trips / poetry readings if advised by the lecturers!

It sounds fun! I've been to visit twice and everyone seems really chilled which is exactly what I need as I hate the hype of a traditional university

oh fab, well yeah, you just take what you want from Birkbeck which is another reason that I love it; everyone's pretty relaxed about everyone and the teachers can be great!

Have you already applied to Birkbeck?

I finished my three year degree last July at Birkbeck (Financial Economics) and it was very high quality and rigorous. Myself and plenty others are now attending LSE/Cambridge/UCL for postgrad on scholarships, for very competitive courses. Social wise, it was without doubt the best three years of my life. I worked hard in the day and had a great time in the evenings.

Classes are much smaller than typical unis and you get much more attention from lecturers due to this. The George bar is very sociable and low cost, and you can to go any UoL bar you like with your bbk card. The IOE is great.

Overall it completely turned my life around, and I got great internships every year too, making me a tidy sum of cash. Other people on my course got full time jobs out of it whilst studying and managed to save serious money (since classes are 6-9pm you can work if want, even on the full time degrees.)

The current student union there are also very friendly if you want to make friends quick. I really never met anyone who had a bad time there. Hope you like it.

I have got into the creative writing and english literature BA course with an unconditional offer and if I decide to go I start this year. I'm a bit worried as to the age range I'm coming to uni straight from college, is there a fair amount of people my age going?

Hey, I don`t know whether you have applied for an undergraduate or a MSc; either way, as a former student, my experience at a MSc run by Birkbeck was awful. I felt pulled in to the University by their skillful marketing and targeted advertisements (full-on cookies when you visit the Birkbeck website, LoL) only to find out that I just spent £10K in a course whose academics were not as good as their marketing material amply promised. I found the whole experience with Birkbeck College very frustrating as I encountered several issues with the the course, the content, as well as the teaching. Throughout the course I felt alone, unsupported and sometimes even talked down to, especially by a few academics, who, for £50K a year, could have the courteous decency to treat their students with more respect. Several of the students I talked to very quite unhappy about the course, with very poor material delivery and expensive fees for what they offer. In my experience, Birkbeck made offers to most who applied, in fact, I noticed that Birkbeck was often the only choice for those in work, or with very low entry grades. So, my advice is to re-evaluate your application with Birkbeck College, and if you have an alternative option, please do consider it with care.
