Are you in the Kings chat?

add me to that fam

Exactly. Which is why "off-site" chats aren't a great idea.

I also have to echo the sentiment that all the facebook chats I'm part of are great, nothing but supportive nice people  if you avoid the dodgy ones that is, the legit ones are perfectly fine

I'll have to disagree with you here: the Emma Facebook group chat's got some top-notch banter, the last post on Emma's TSR thread was almost a month ago

Not disagreeing with you, FB chats can be great banter, especially in the boredom leading up coming to Cambridge. But, as a bit of unsolicited advice: none of the friendships you make on there will carry over to real life when you actually go to Cambridge. You'll cultivate organic friendships at Cambridge. I think what Doonesbury was saying is that the TSR thread is the place for actual/useful advice from experts (like the PAT and CAT) and experience from current students (especially since you haven't actually met your offers yet and don't have college parents).

But yeah, the banter on the chats are great

Yep - they *can* be good. But just be aware...

And TSR doesn't allow promotion of non-official FB groups (official JCR/CUSU ones are absolutely fine though).

This year the CUSU's group was made early and it's got a list of groups for all colleges and courses, so all those should count as "official"

That time when I came back to my phone and saw basically 200 new messages of memes on the NatSci chat...

I hope for you you've read all of those back if not then you've seriously missed out

Yep. Some can be a cover for spammers, and also it's best to share thoughts on this thread. That's what it's here for, especially when current and past students can also chip in with the benefit of their experiences.

I was in a group chat everyone was sound but I quit because it was distracting me from my academics and i needed (and still do) to cool my head and not get wound up on the could-bes if I make it

Going to find a little weekend job for after my exams, concentrate on studying and hitting the marks for my Cambridge offer, get the tools together to learn Classical Latin over summer and entertain the thought of being at Durham instead

I prefer TSR to the group chats tbh

The only group chat I'm still in is one with my friends so that I have a shoulder to cry on when I need one 😂😂 but I prefer TSR anyway because I can get onto it at school, even in my supervised study sessions (I don't have data on my phone)

Haha I have various ones  all for sixth form except one hahaha

Guys do we know how the A* is being awarded under the reforms? Is it just everyone who gets above a certain grade no matter what or to do with the performance nationwide or? :s-smilie:

I was told % of people- though it varies with subject (as in the percentage).

So as a result, i suppose it's both. obviously if you get 100% you're gonna be A*, but you don't need to be perfect- so if everyone else does worse I suppose it'll be easier to obtain an A*.

Of course it'll have to do with performance across the cohort... it wouldn't make any sense for it not to be. Grade boundaries will be set in accordance with how the cohort performs.

So if everyone does badly, it'll be easier to obtain, like 275/300, and if everyone does well it'll be like 290/300 marks or something

Basic principle would be same for all exam boards.

All but one of my friends in my group chat are in my sixth form; the one girl who isn't was at our school until year 11 and then went elsewhere for sixth form.

I think It's linked to performance nationally - I mean, last year, for AQA AS chem and bio, the grade boundaries were like 64% and 58% respectively for an A grade, so they might be lower than we think. Although if your teachers are anything like mine, they wont accept anything less than 90%

Well it's just as before... they have always adjusted grade boundaries to take the ability of the cohort and difficulty of the paper into account. The difference this time is there's no UMS.

The advice remains, do the best *you* can do. That's really the only thing in your control

I'm glad to hear that

Just out of curiosity, are GCSE and AS grade boundaries done in the same way as the A-level ones - ie the top, say, 10% get an A* ??
