Children's Nursing or Adult Nursing

I'm thinking of studying at either Staffordshire University or Wolverhampton University but the main problem is.. should I go for adult nursing or children's nursing? Apparently if you do adult nursing you can get a job in all different areas of nursing but can you still decide later on to get a job in a children's ward with the adult degree or can you only work in a children's ward with the children's degree... im really interested in both and I'm more drawn towards children's nursing but I'm not sure which one would be better for me.. has anyone studied at Wolverhampton or Stafford studying either of these subjects?

Ah clearly you have come across someone who believes the age-old myth that children's nursing is limiting!

Let's get one thing totally straight: You can only work on a children's ward as a children's nurse. Some PICUs, NICUs and Emergency Departments take adult trained nurses with experience in adult ICU or A&E as there are deemend to be transferable skills (I'm sceptical about this) but this is becoming increasingly less common, and a department's preference will be towards someone who is children's trained. Those very few adult nurses who work in paeds/neonatal areas will also always stay at Band 5 (Staff Nurse) level and not be able to progress further due to the fact they are not children's trained.

With children's nursing there are loads of specialist nurse and senior roles available. Do not believe anyone who tells you that you can go further in adult nursing than children's. It is simply not true!
