Hello! I was wondering if you happened to take a gap year before you applied for uni? I'm in year 12 and I'm supposed to apply for uni in October this year, but i dont have any work experience and I know how important it is for vet degrees.. I managed to get a 2 week placement at a vets over the summer and volunteer work at weekends at a stables, but apart from that I dont have anything else. Would you advise I take a gap year to build up my experience? Any advice is appreciated.. thank you!

I decided late I wanted to do vet med and I did ALL my work experience over the summer and continued it right up until the deadline and even after the deadline (so incase I didn't get any interview etc I would have enough to apply for the year after).

-Two weeks in vets (2 mixed)
-Two weeks milking
-Two/three weeks at RDA
-I also held a job at a pet shop for a year
-1 day lab work experience
-A few days in an animal sanctuary

I actually continued milking after the deadline and have about 12 weeks built up lol I stopped back in January.

I currently have 3 offers for vet med

You could do some dairy if necessary as that's the only thing I can see that's missing. The number of weeks only matters when it comes to applying to Liverpool, the rest aren't overly fussed about work experience and they only ask that you have the minimum which is something like 5 weeks. Thanks Lizzie, I have been looking for a dairy placement for a while now but they seem impossible to find, especially with accommodation. :/ but hopefully I'll manage to arrange something before October

Which lab did you do your placement at? I would really love to do a day or two at some point but can't find any labs!

I did mine at agri-food and biosciences institute (afbi) - its a veterinary science lab with other labs etc. (afbi is based jn Norrthern Ireland but there is similar in England - check out places that do pathology etc)!

Nationwide labs might be a good path lab to use. Started my work experience there today and it's great.

I've got one booked for axiom labs which is a vet lab, based in Dorset, I don't know what it will be like yet but looking forward to it!
So far I have got:

1 week small animal practice
1 week equine
1 week kennels and cattery
2 day veterinary pathology lab
Current ongoing work experience a petting zoo

To get:
Large animal practice
Dairy farm
Does anyone have any websites or contacts for a large animal vet practise near or around south London. Its the only bit of work experience I have left to sort. I can't seem to find any near by on Google. Any replies will be greatly appreciated!

I'm aiming to apply to RVC, Liverpool, Surrey, Bristol

Work experience wise I have
4 weeks - equestrian centre
3 weeks - Large Animals
1 day/night - Lambing

Planned -
1 week SA vets
2 weeks - Zoo

Has anyone else applied to the pre vet summer school at RVC ?
I am slightly worried about my GCSE English Language B and Literature C, I have the minimum requirement for Language will this be okay ?

Hope everyone's revision is going okay

Hey I was there, I think I might have talked to you towards the end of the day about drama clubs in the Camden Campus? Were you part of the zoological society?

I don't remember that specific conversation (sorry, there were a lot of people there! :colondollar: ), but yes I am in ZooSoc  I was in the Camden Campus room with all the whiteboards with pictures

I wandered in that room, just had a nosy. Might look at the Camden campus as I really don't like London, but I may be swayed by the campus.

Anyone going the Liverpool open day on the 24th and in Group 1???
when I was at the Cambridge open day I was talking to a lecturer and he offered me a few days of work experience with him at the referral hospital and said I could stay over at one of the colleges
it sounded AMAZING at the time but now I'm questioning whether it's worth it :/
it's a 3 hour journey and I'm guessing I'd have to pay for the accommodation, would I be better off just going to a normal vet that's closer to me??
