LSE PPE Student: Ask Me Anything!

Hey! I'm just finishing off my first year at LSE, studying PPE, and I've really enjoyed it! If you have any questions about the course, about my thoughts or about the experience - please ask away!

I talk about my studies on my YouTube channel too, so if you're thinking of applying to LSE at all you should check it out and sub for videos about uni very soon:

Why PPE at LSE and not Oxford?
Is the social life at LSE really as bad as people say?
Why do you think LSE student satisfaction is as bad as it is?
Is accommodation/cost a problem living in London?
Is LSE really a lot more maths-heavy like people say?

Yo!
1) I did apply for Oxford, but didn't get an offer! Beside that, I really wanted to be in London, and LSE seemed to be the best choice there. I can honestly say now I am there, and having experienced Oxford uni through the UNIQ Summer School and interviews, I'm so happy I'm here and think it suits me better!

2) no! The social life for me is actually AMAZING. People say the social life is bad because it's easy to not get involved and dodge being sociable: a lot of the international students are perhaps nervous to get involved, and it is a majority of international students here. Also there's a lot of postgrads: we're quite a small and selective university! I love it because I get really involved with the Students' Union and SU politics, so I think it's what you make of it just as much as any university.

3) As I mentioned, I think it's a combination of: 1) lots of international students (2/3rds!) 2) 55% are postgrads, and they are likely more critical 3) London is expensive and it's easy to get isolated if you make no effort and 4) LSE is quite an academically intense environment!

4) Accommodation and costs are higher. BUT: the government gives you a higher loan, and the school provides support. I'm comprehensively educated, from a working class family, and I survive and have fun fine. You need to be careful, and watch your money - I think that's the key.

5) LSE is quite maths-heavy! If you take econ, you have to take maths modules alongside it. So, I take some maths, because of the economics element of my degree. HOWEVER: if you take a course that doesn't include maths or economics, you won't be coming across maths. We're a specialist university after all, so this might explain it.

I studied maths, English lit, history and fine art at A level! The offer for PPE is A*AA with A* in maths, so to study it here you need to study maths at A level!

On my personal statement: I mainly talked about reading I've done! I didn't have many extra curriculars apart from getting involved at my school, so I did a lot of reading and critically engaged with it in my personal statement.

Thanks for responding!

If you don't mind me asking, what were your GCSE and A level predicted grades? And why do you think you didn't get an offer from Oxford?

Also, what are some of the advantages of LSE being in London and not a campus/collegiate uni? Do you get less of a sense of a 'uni experience'?
Hi again,

Just wanted to know what you read. Especially to show you interest to the uni in all 3 subject areas.

Take in from me: don't worry about your predicted grades. GCSE predicted grades do not matter at all, only what you get. Your A level predicted grades just need to be your offer!

As I said, I'm much happier that I'm at LSE than Oxford! I'm comprohensively educated, and the interview at Oxford is MASSIVELY biased towards privately-educated students. This is because they get tutoring, and help passing the admission tests. This is one of the reasons I think! Other than that, who knows!

Nope, you still get a'uni experience'! LSE's student union is very political and involved, and I definitely feel very involved in the student uni experience. As I've said though, if you exclude yourself, you won't! It's up to you! And being in a city is just a lot more exciting... less of a 'bubble'.

I read some of the following:
Philosophy:
Think, Simon Blackburn
Famine, Affluence and Morality, Singer

Politics:
Equality and Justice, Miller
Utilitarianism, Mill
Newspapers!
The Judicial House of Lords 1979-2009

Economics:
Game Theory, Romp
Economic Individualism and Collectivism, George Walford

That's pretty much all the reading I mentioned on my personal statement!

Hi, can you expand on what you mean by "critically engaged"?

xx!

I'm an offer holder for law, and was considering making some 'access' videos on YouTube if I get in this year. Just wanted to say your videos are really cool and well-edited. Is that actually your room at the LSE? If so, I'm surprised at how you've been able to personalise it.

Any tips for students starting next year? Anything you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Not saying 'I read book X', but instead saying 'I read book X and thought ... about it' - showing that you're understanding and evaluating what you've done! For example, criticising any opinions, etc etc

Yes it is my room in the High Holborn student accommodation! I will be doing a room tour soon, as well. I like to personalise it a lot - there's nothing you can't do without a lot of colourful paper and pillows.
If anyone has any questions about the course in particular, or student living in London too, let me know!
Is everyone at LSE really keen on going to the finance/banking sector, trying to get internship etc? Is LSE a good place for a career in research/academia?
Also, do you specialize in 2 subjects after the first year or you need to study all three?
Is there a big difference between PPE and subjects like Economics and Philosophy ?
Sorry for asking you a lot of questions xx

LSE does have quite a lot of students attracted to the corporate sector - consultancy seems to be a popular destination for qualitative courses going into city work. I'd say this is perhaps more prominent here than at other unis... Many people od get internships if they wish to do this! But! That's not what you have to do. I want to go into the public sector, and I have no desire to go into the private sector at all. In addition, as a top-ranking university, its one of the best unis if you want a career in academics or research.

No, PPE at LSE is a lot more thorough than PPE at unis like Oxford - you continue all of them for the entire degree! This is something I quite like. And the difference between PPE and PP, PE etc is not that big: you will share some courses (classes and lectures) with people from other degrees. Look on the website and compare the courses to see where they overlap - that will give you a better answer than I can!
Thanks y'all!

Thanks a lot! Just thinking about the joint honour of two subjects has a lower entry requirement than PPE

I'd only suggest doing PPE if you are interested in all three subjects: you're going to be doing all o fthem for four year! I wouldn't do it because of the prestige of the course. If you're only interested in two a joint honours would be a better choice.

Oh thanks for that!
I'm interested in all three subjects but I know less about politics so I'm not sure whether I will enjoy that as much as the other two. Probably I should read more about politics and try to find out
Btw, will the workload and amount of reading and writing be very difficult for people whose first language is not English to cope with? How many international students are there doing PPE?
Thanks.
