Beliefs incompatible with the West.
Perhaps if we hadn't trampled all over these countries during colonisation they would have been left to evolve and become more equal societies.

As it is, we screwed with the economy, welfare and rights of these countries so if the men are being controlling and hyper-masculine perhaps this is their culture attempting to make up for the times where they were completely subjugated and had no rights in their own countries.

Just a theory. But the West shouldn't be held up as some 'Gold' standard for rights. We have been and still are quite horrible to other nations of the world.
And is this down to Islam or would they think it anyway... you say it as if any of the things stated are only relevant to Muslims.

People can believe in a teapot orbiting Venus for all I care as long as they don't demand it's the one true belief system that should conquer the globe and as long as I'm allowed to criticise it.

It's worth reading about the Ottoman Empire rather than blaming everything on western colonialism. The Barbary slave trade makes especially interesting reading.

Egypt was a province of the Ottoman Empire for centuries - far longer than the few decades that it was a British Protectorate. And before that, it was conquered by the Arab Islamic Caliphate for centuries. Surely they are more to blame for these attitudes?

For about 50 years.
It was part of the Ottoman Empire for three and a half centuries and under the rule of the Islamic Caliphate for six centuries.
It would seem reasonable that the cultural attitudes are due to almost 1000 years of Islamic imperialism rather than a few decades of British rule.

Still, why blame the actual culprit when you can blame the British Empire.
