Trump thinks he can fire his way out of investigations? Amazing stuff. He'll set up a puppet in charge now, and I suspect try to sweep things under the carpet. Can't see that happening though.

Trump really is leading the most calamitous administration.

Did he forget that James Comey won the election for him?

Let's just hope it goes the way of what happened when Nixon fired the FBI director, completely south.

Would have been better if he went up straight to his face, pointed at him and shouted "you're fired" and then gave him the finger as he walked away. But yeah, good decision.

Probably not. However the knowledge that the FBI opened their formal investigation into Trump-Russia collusion under Comey's leadership is probably at the forefront of his memory.

This is the big question going forward- The FBI is investigating Trump right now and whoever takes over the bureau will be appointed by Trump personally. If a Special Prosecutor isn't appointed to continue leading this investigation independently of Trump's appointee then the legitimacy of the investigations findings could seriously be called into question.
He needs to terminate a lot of ppl running this deep state

He only needs to appeal to his supporters. He can fake news the rest of it. Least it is interesting. Like the Apprentice, but bigger.

Nixon didn't fire the FBI director. Hoover died in office; the Senate wouldn't confirm his replacement and Nixon then promoted the replacement's replacement, Ruckelshaus, from FBI director to Deputy Attorney General. Nixon then claimed to have fired Ruckelshaus from his post as Deputy Attorney General but the better historical view is that Ruckelshaus resigned. However, by that time he was long gone from the FBI and his successor at the FBI remained in office until the Carter presidency.

Objectively Comey deserved the sack. There is no-one jumping to defend him.

We are in the bizarre situation that he has been sacked by the President whose campaign he is investigating, on the recommendation of the Attorney General, who is implicated in the alleged criminality, because of widespread concerns that he is biased against the losing Presidential candidate to the benefit of the President.

Only this week Comey has misled the Senate as to the extent of the mishandling of Clinton's emails.

A failure to sack Comey could well have been the subject of a future Article of Impeachment against Trump.

In many ways you couldn't have made up the Trump presidency. If Trump's election was the result of Russian manipulation, the one thing you would have hoped this would have achieved would have been improved relations with Russia.

Indeed, it's the circumstances surrounding this that make the timing of the firing extremely concerning.

We've now had the announcement Grand Jury subpoenas have been filed to go alongside the earlier Senate request for Trump's finances, so thankfully it appears this is move in the right direction, i.e closer to Trump. A sign of possible indictments to come.

As I think many expect though, Trump will be trying to constantly prove there's nothing suspicious afoot.

It may have been convenient for Trump that Comey misled Congress within the last few days, but that would have finished any civil servant anywhere in the world at any time. You only have to look at Charlotte Hogg misleading a Commons committee to see that.

This just screams out Richard Nixon.

He fires the only one powerful enough to lead an investigation into his ties with Russia?

Comey was not having any of Trump's ******** so he got fired.

I can't wait for kids down the line to learn about how Trump was one of the worst politicians of all time.

He fired him because for the last 2 years Comey's tenure has been a farce. For both Democrats and Republicans. He's bungled everything he's touched. The fact that the left are now criticising this firing sums up how hysterical and partisan they've become.

Nobody's shedding tears over the loss of Comey because of the wonderful work he's done, criticism of his work over the last couple of years has come from both sides of the aisle. I don't think it's a "hysterical" thing to be worried about how the FBI is able to continue investigating Trump under the impending leadership of a Trump loyalist.
Good riddance for bad rubbish
The thing is though people are shedding tears. The Democrats are in full tantrum mode in America over this.
Scrutinise the replacement pick that's fine, but let's rejoice that Comey is gone because the man was beyond a failure.
