"Cambridge has topped the Guardian University Guide league table for the seventh year running, while Oxford remains in second place and St Andrews in third.
There’s little change among the top 10 universities: Durham University, which ranked sixth last year, is in fourth place, while Bath University has climbed from 10th to fifth position. Imperial College London, Loughborough, Warwick, Lancaster, Surrey and UCL make up the rest of the top 10. Coventry remains the highest-ranked former polytechnic in the guide, moving up from 15th to 12th place."

The Guardian overall ranking is based on combining the results from all of the subject tables - unlike the other rankings where having a large intake of medicine or similar students can bump you up the overall rankings the guardian rewards good performance across ALL subjects and punishes universities with relatively poor performance in a number of subjects

KCL is second from bottom of the med table with a score of half the top ranked university. In other rankings the high A level scores and career prospects from medicine would reward KCL for that in the overall table - in the Guardian it drags their position in the overall table down. They also only score 45/100 for dentistry, 41/100 for Nursing, 57/100 for Chemistry and 58/100 for Maths top ten rankings in arts and humanities subjects aren't going to be enough to balance those very low relative scores - they'd need to come top (100/100) in 3 or 4 tables that they have large numbers of students in to start balancing that.

This is why the Guardian push applicants so hard towards the subject rankings - the overall rankings are just the clickbait to pay for the rest of the tables.

Career prospects for bradford 85% in grad jobs/study, Imperial 81%. Staff student ratio 11.9 v 16.9 (and you KNOW that at Imperial they'll be more interested in their research than at Bradford so in terms of contact time Bradford will be a good choice).

Bradford isn't taking in the top performers but they're providing good teaching and their students get good jobs...why shouldn't they be in the top 5? It's a ranking of university teaching PERFORMANCE not a ranking of prestige or preconceptions.

Because Surrey's students are happier with their teaching and feedback on their work and Warwick are mean about giving out firsts and 2is to maths students.

And because Oxford has a ridiculously tiny staff student ratio and accepts students with a broader range of qualifications to Cambridge/is less mean about giving out firsts and 2is.

Basically if you want to do maths at Cambridge or Warwick then make sure you're 100% confident that you'll do well - if you struggle even slightly you'll be getting a 2ii or a 3rd even if you think you're the dogs after A levels.
These rankings look pretty accurate.

I never understood the point of University League Tables. For one thing there are so many different ones. How do you know which one to believe? How do you know which one is accurate or the definitive one? In other words, what the hell is the point of them when they all say different things? Shouldn't a student ignore them altogether and decide where they want to go based on, you know, where they want to go?
