AQA A2 GEOG4a EXAM DISCUSSION, 09/05/17

Hi guys, thought i'd make a detailed thread of resources for the exam on Friday, I take no credit for these but thought it'd be useful to compile them all together. If you have any other resources please add them, hope this is useful, good luck!!

http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/geography/as-and-a-level/geography-2030/subject-content/unit-4a - specification from AQA for geog4a

https://getrevising.co.uk/resources/a2_aqa_geography_unit_4a_revision_notes
Detailed resource on specific fieldwork, but can be applied to your own. Also lots on skills and statistical tests

https://getrevising.co.uk/revision-cards/aqa_geography_skills_unit_4a - again fieldwork questions and how to answer them with skills

http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/geography/as-and-a-level/geography-2030/subject-content/unit-4a - specimen paper from AQA with mark scheme

http://www.portland-place.co.uk/docs/A2_Paper_4a_-_Geographical_Fieldwork_Investigation_Revision.pdf - list of all skills required to know

judging by the pattern in recent years data presentation could come up- so scatter graphs for my fieldwork, but it's AQA so who knows. The aim/purpose will most likely come up but not sure about how it'll be worded. Secondary data hasn't come up since 2012, and implications of results since 2013- this question in particular is a bit unusual so i'd recommend taking a look. As for the skills section my teacher keeps saying it will be technology(but that came up last year) or statistical techniques

Hi guys, I'm really struggling to understand man Whitney U. Could someone briefly explain it too me?

This test is simply used to see if two sets of data are significantly different or not, it is a non-parametric test. you don't have to know the formula but you do have to know that:

you will end up with two U values, you take the lowest value and compare it to the critical vale at a probability of 0.05, if the U value is lower than the critical value then the data is significantly different, i.e we can be 95% sure that the realationship is not due to chance. Hope this helps
Does anyone have any predictions as to which questions will be in the exam?

how is everyone revising for this?

put my fieldwork notes into a powerpoint. I got another powerpoint off get revising I think which lists all the things required for section b... then just using that to do practice essays. Find this one difficult to revise for because section a is so unique (and because i just looked at my fieldwork notes from two years ago and found that i forgot to finish the mann whitney u...)

it's so hard to revise for i know, hardly been taught it either

what comments can you make about the suitability of a scatter graph? I have written about it being a good visual representation, two variables, cannot say whether statistically significant so still need to carry out stats test...

does this one work?

Does anyone know roughly how I could answer this question? My fieldwork was about urban decline and our conclusions were that it was definitely in decline, for various reasons such as derelict buildings, vacant shops, and poor environmental quality. The only thing I can think of is 'getting the local council involved in making a plan of action to improve the quality of the area/getting local residents involved' etc. The mark scheme is so vague :/ :/

Assess the implications of your conclusions for geographers and other interested parties (12 marks)

Not sure how relevant these will be because we did a river study but:
-Could be used as secondary data by other colleges/ field study councils
-Beneficial for land use planners
-Useful for conversationalists, land use planners and RSPB (our river was in a national park)
-Environmentalists could use the data
These are the only ones that may be useful as the others are all about rivers, sorry :frown:

Lots of points can be shown in a small space, can identify patterns in the data quickly, can identify anomalies, a line of best fit can be added to show trend, the results can be analysed using Spearman's Rank to assess the strength of the relationship. Guess the negatives could be added to say why it's not suitable? So like human error, only 2 variables and it doesn't explain the relationship? hope this helps :/

Can you give the other points as I have never seen this question before and struggling to think of anything else.

Yes it does thank you!
Does anyone know whether I can use Discharge as "ONE method of data collection" even though it involves collecting velocity and Cross Sectional Area?
