The Student Room Group

First woman to win the fields medal, Maryam Mirzakhani, dies at the age of 40.

Most people won't appreciate who she was or what she does but I am shocked ,pretty sad :frown:.

I am thinking in terms of the general public.
I would not think someone on TSR would have heard of her, since her field of work is not necessarily a hot topic on TSR threads.

The general public have heard of few academics unless they are on TV a lot, i.e. Brian Cox..

Yeah, that's what I mean, haha.. which is fine because you cannot really expect the general public (i.e. anyone outside of Maths) to really appreciate her work because most would not even begin to grasp it, haha.

For me,if the Iranian government wants to honour her,it should remove the stupid mandatory hijab rule and ensure there are equal opportunities for women in academia and government, which at the moment it is not.

The world of Mathematics will greatly miss your contribution to furthering the knowledge of all mankind.

The hijab has nothing to do with opportunities in academia, the discrimination women face is the governments fault and has nothing to do with Islam.

I never said that, you are falsely missing up my arguments.
I mentioned the hijab because the govt has no right to make such a law and the influence of religious conservatives is.one reason why many young people leave the country.
Many young women wearing the hijab in a way that shows their hair , to flaunt the rules and show they don't care.
We are going off topics, make a new thread for this if you want to discuss.

My daughter told me about the fields medal - she is a Phd student.

This is awfully young to die
Have removed pretty much most of the thread. Please do debate differing strands of discussions in dedicated threads, rather than hijacking someone else's thread. There's no real need for it.

May her soul RIP. I wish we find a cure to cancer soon. But then, cancer develops a way to invade the immune system. Very saddening.
