This is probably a random question but could science practicals and supervisions be at weekends? Because I've just been reminded of a commitment I have in London on sat 7th October that I'd committed to in October last year, when I didn't even think I'd get an interview... It's the first weekend after lectures start on the Thursday and I can't get out of my commitment... Feeling really worried about starting if I get the grades now


Yes, NatScis are renowned for having Saturday lectures and potentially supervisions. It's not something to fret about too much though – you can always get in touch with your DoS if/when you do get in for the sake of your own peace of mind.

Everything in Cambridge is within an hour's walk, if you're at a central college most things you'll go to are within half an hour's walk so for most people a bike isn't necessary.

This very obviously depends on where you live. My lectures were 45 seconds by foot away (King's -> Cockroft), some people had to bike for 12-15 mins (Girton -> Cockroft) to get there.

Which college will you be at and what course?
Just to give you some very basic idea, it takes about 1hr to walk from Girton (the further most college) to Downing Site in the town centre, but there's a bus service.
From Homerton to Downing Site, it's about 1/2 hr but there's bus, too.
If you're at colleges in the town centre, Sidgwick Site is about 10/15 min walk and Computer Lab is about 1/2 hr walk.

Then from second year onward, there's a good chance you'll be living in a college accommodation outside the main site and your lecture/practicals/supervision locations may have more variations.

I know a few people who managed without bike, but they were at colleges quite near their lectures (Sidgwick) , though one of them was a Cox and he ran to the boat house with his crew on their bike......

If you're cycling, travelling time reduces dramatically, of course, almost all of wherever you need to go are within 10/15 min ride at most, within 5 min in many cases. (Except for medics and vet meds for their clinicals/practicals) So cycling definitely makes your life easier.

But if you're not very good at cycling, I'd very strongly recommend you practice a lot before you arrive at Cambridge. The roads are narrow, with many other riders hurrying to their lectures/etc. unpredictable tourists, cars. It's definitely not for a novice.

Maybe @Serine Sоul can give you good advice from her first-hand experience as a non-rider.

I know I could have lectures, but the timing of this commitment would mean that I wouldn't have to leave Cambridge until early afternoon anyway - I'm looking at being away from Cambridge from like 1pm until like 8pm, so I could do lectures first. It was just supervisions and practicals I was massively worried about. Was genuinely expecting a rejection so thought I'd be fine to do it (even though it would have meant longer away from my insurance uni)

I'm certainly planning on walking - I can ride a bike but not confidently enough. Plus I prefer walking to cycling.

This is NatSci isn't it? It's quite possible you could have a 12-1pm Saturday lecture.

Yeah it is and I know.. Thankfully I wouldn't need to miss it as it would be ok if I like ran down to the train station after that time lecture - I'd just make it to London in time

I got an offer from Homerton which I guess is quite far. I would prefer to walk as well but I dont know how far the maths lectures are

I'm assuming maths lectures are held at the maths site at the top of the city (although I could be wrong), which is two and a half to three miles away from Homerton. I personally didn't like the walk between Homerton and the city so took the bus when I needed to get there - the good thing is there's a bus stop right outside the college. It might help to try and look at different walking routes on Google Maps, and maybe try and find some bus timetables online to see if that option would ease your journey.

Missing a lecture isn't a big deal. Supervisions that early in term are unlikely and you can always have them moved. I don't know about practicals, but I don't think you have them on Saturdays

You'll probably be ok in the first (and second?) year as lectures are in the town centre, but when you start having lectures in CMS, that's a quite long way to walk.....
Never walked that way, but I know it takes good 10 min+ by car.

Maybe @physicsmaths knows some mathmos at homerton without a bike .............???

They're not held there for the first two years.

Well, I'm not sure what bus you used to take - but the subsidised bus service from Homerton to the city has been discontinued.

You can get a bus to town then another to West Cambridge but it's way more expensive.
