UK plans age verification to watch porn

Honestly, this is pretty scary. I'm guessing this comes with the new Investigatory Powers Act they released last year but it's also something that's potentially pretty dangerous. If this was to go through - which inevitably seems like it will - and you're forced to provide verification (credit card details or whatever) this same information could easily be used against you. I mean I certainly wouldn't see it as being uncommon if this was to happen, whether it's by the government or by potential breaches of the site - which would then only result in information of users being leaked. It really does seem like an invasion of privacy, one that I don't think was at all necessary.

'Companies breaking the rules set out in the Digital Economy Act face being blocked by their internet provider.' The fact that even now they can control what sites we can/cannot access (I know this has already been happening, yet it's still pretty amazing how nobody bats an eye at any of this, or the minimal amount of people who are made aware...)

I don't know, this is all kind of hard to comprehend. It feels like the first step to an Orwellian society.

The way the article is written makes it seem as if it really is final, I wouldn't be surprised if this did happen and nobody was made aware.

Not sure but the way the article is written makes it seem as if it's final, this could really be happening.

I'm sure there is no way that they can fully ban it. Websites can pop up all the time, you can even see porn on youtube which is ridiculous. The internet is like a virus and there is no way to stop it. Let alone the people who will download 10tb of porn just to share with everyone lol
So someone is going to be searching up porn sites and checking that they're following this potential new law?

Imagine that job title.

I like it how the Conservatives claim they want a smaller state, yet the reality is they love big, intrusive, paternalistic government.

I see it as unworkable as any semi-computer literate kid will still be able to access porn.
This sounds about as fanciful as banning encryption
as a porn addict and on a100 day streak and on a 2.5 years year journey on no fap fapastronaut i can say thank **** for that. wish i never ever saw any of it. hope kids avoid it too
GOOD. Pornography should be illegal, and this is a giant step forward.
**** right off May

"Kids watching porn is immoral, but selling weapons to Saudi that end up being used to murder kids of the same age is coolio"
It is one of those odd things that is rather emotive. I understand the need for age verification because we are now in a world where teenagers get their sex education from porn. As a result, girls grow up thinking that the default state is that all men want to *** all over them, that in sex women must always be subservient and that they must have surgery to tidy up their genitalia. But it seems to me that the solution to this would be to provide proper sex and relationship education that acknowledges that sex is fun but also talks about loving relationships of all hues and colours. All this legislation will actually do is force people to use VPNs.
I'm starting to think ours and other governments around the world have never heard of a Vpn before.

If there's a will, there's a way.
"All this means that while we can enjoy the freedom of the web, the UK will have the most robust internet child protection measures of any country in the world."

In other words, the freedom of the web is only for adults. And they wonder why swarms of young people vote Labour?

I'm not allowed to rep you enough
Oh, that sucks. If only there was a way around it :colone:
Yes lets ban encryption and then make people enter their credit card details to access websites.

What is wrong with these people?
So we're all gonna have to prove we watch porn? Think I'll just just my imagination from now on

I'm against this too but this trend of comparing everything to the arms trade is so stupid and tiresome.

The Digital minister doesn't have the first idea about how the technology works, just like most of the government.
