What subjects are you all looking to take at AS? (Sept 17)

Hey guys,

I was wondering what subjects everyone has decided to take for AS level?

I thought it would be good to bring together some prospective AS students to discuss some subjects and possible degree options!

Pina Colada's subject choices:

1)History
2)English Lit
3)Politics
4)Sociology or RE
5)EPQ on race relations in the 60's.

Predicted/attained grades: A*AAAAAAAAC (Attained)

Prospective careers: History/English degree with a transition into either Law or teaching.

I took AS chem and bio 2 years back. I found them both brilliant at AS.

Good to know they are good subjects
at my school, we don't do AS, just the full A-level. I'll probably be taking:
english lit
sociology
art and design
also considering doing an EPQ at some point, something to do with art, maybe linking to another subject. i'd really like to do something using risograph.
career wise i want to make art and write, maybe do some teaching as well.

yeah, at least for the first year; the theme's love through the ages and the texts are handmaids tale, othello, the great gatsby and a poetry anthology with a load of different writers. the second year the theme's modern identity and all i'm sure of is we're studying a tennessee williams play (whom i'm a massive fan of). coursework wise we get to choose as long as one of the two texts is published before 1900. do you know what books you're doing?

Ooh, nice books! I'm also doing THT and Othello. Wish I were doing Gatsby, it's such a good book <3 though I might be dropping English to do full further maths so I might not get to do any of them.

the great gatsby is indeed, i'm about half way through atm. i did english lit a level for a month last year before i had to drop out (medical stuff) and it was great, so if you do end up doing it it's pretty fun once you get into the swing of it. are you doing the aqa a spec for english lit?

Yeah...honestly, it does look like a really nice A-level, it's relevant to me albeit perhaps less so than maths (I'm a linguistics applicant, interested in formal and perhaps even computational linguistics) and I'd like to study it. I'm not too sure what to do. I'm doing OCR.

I am studying The Handmaiden's Tale in September also. In addition to that, we are reading Frankenstein and A Streetcar Named Desire. I have already read Streetcar and Frankenstein, and I have begun reading The Handmaidens Tale. I giving recommend giving the new TV show a watch though, its brilliant.

I would personally say it is more relevant to linguistics than Maths.

That would be intuitive, but there is no explicit literary analysis in a linguistics degree and texts are studied quite differently for the purposes of linguistics from how they are studied in modern languages/literary disciplines, there is a fair amount of maths in general linguistics, especially logic and set theory, and the specialisms I'm personally more interested in (formal/structural and computational areas) are more mathematical. Also, one of the courses I'm applying for is maths and linguistics (it doesn't require further maths, but still). You could definitely study/look at linguistics in a more 'literary' way, as well as in a mathematical way, however - that's the beauty of the field :smile:

linguistics is rad! i really enjoyed it at gcse. i know people who really like the subject and english language a level (which i assume you're taking?). one of my friends did further maths and is really struggling as she doesn't enjoy it (she much prefers art now to any of the maths/physics); i think it's a subject for those who really love maths and love noodling around within the subject - if you don't it may just become a chore. further maths may be useful within computational linguistics though i wouldn't be surprised if maths would be sufficient (idk). they are both well respected A levels so it's probably just a matter of what you are going to have more of a laugh studying a lot.

yeah i want to watch it but i want to read the book first so i'm going to read it after the summer reading: far from the madding crowd. a streetcar named desire is terrific, in fact i think it might be the play i study second year but the teacher on the taster day said it could equally be a glass menagerie (which i haven't read yet but it is on my list).

I just got straight to doing some A level History and English. It's just too much free time for me.

Hey! Good question... I am taking:
1. Spanish
2. Biology or Psychology (depending on GCSE results)
3. Politics
4. It's not for sure but I might do an EPQ on the Russian Revolution
Prospective career: Midwifery and probably a master's degree related to it

Yeah hahahaha, I am doing it because I have already learnt about the Russian Revolution in History GCSE for coursework (from which I got an A*) so that would give me a basis.

When I did my coursework we did it about WW2 propaganda (2015). I would have much rather done the Russian revolution!

Are you not doing History at A level?

I kinda wish I did but it is not related to the course I want to do at university, so no.
