Funding after a part-complete degree in another area?

Hi there

I am an ex-student, I was at University in Reading, but now am in full time employment at living wage. I am 23 years old, and I am now looking into nursing as a degree.

I went through 1.5 years at my previous university, before having to leave in 2015 for reasons including bullying and ill mental health. Now I am wanting to return to education as a mental health nurse, already being in the healthcare profession.

I would like to know how I would go about applying for funding and if I would be eligible for student loans? I went on the gov.uk website and found this below;

You’ll usually get student finance only if you’re doing your first higher education qualification - even if your previous course was self-funded.

However I spoke with someone who knows a lot about places in nursing etc and works to help find placements for people in Sussex, and they were unaware of any way to get a second degree funded. They suggested perhaps it would not count as I hadn't completed a first degree?

Normally Student Finance England will not fund a second degree unless it is is an exception course. You will be pleased to know that nursing falls into this category. Courses designated as NHS courses will remain as exception courses. This means students who already hold a degree or previous study can still access the full package of funding, this includes full means tested support and a tuition fee loan.
