[New Year 12s] What university do you plan to go to? [Poll]

Poll

What RG uni are you aiming for, at this moment in time?

If you are a new year 12 (and are starting sixth form in September), and if you already have an idea of which university you would like to go and study at, which one would that be? Have you any idea of the course that you want to study?

Obviously, at this moment in time, not a huge number of people will have an idea, but based on collective speculation elsewhere on this forum, it looks like some people already have an idea of what uni they want to go to. I'm interested in seeing what unis people are commonly aiming for (as in top Russel Group unis).

There's hardly any unis on the poll, but so far I feel so determined to go to Birmingham, I went to the open day when my sister was uni hunting last summer and it was just so beautiful and the staff seemed so excited to teach and it had a great atmosphere. I would consider Cambridge but I feel a bit put off seeing as there's hardly any BME students, as well as the pressure and expectations that seems to follow with Oxbridge uni's. As for what course I want to take, I'm not quite sure yet as I'm hoping my A-levels make me realise what subject I'm most passionate about pursuing as a career

Cambridge, Imperial and LSE are the ones I'm going to aim for. Of course, everyone who is capable wants to study at Oxbridge but I think solely aiming for it is kind of silly, as you may be thoroughly disappointed if you miss your offer, or don't get one in the first place. I've read that the latter two universities are just as good, or better, when it comes to future graduate employment (which is what it's all about, for me anyway).
Thinking about either Sheffield or Lancaster atm, going to take psychology as long as I get the grades, then hopefully get onto a doctorate in clinical psychology at Sheffield. Still trying to find other reasonable ones that I'd actually like, as with say, Bangor, it's all well and good for the undergraduate course, but for the doctorate there you need at least a year of experience, meaning I'd need to switch universities or take more time out to do that. And it's pretty low pay at 20k anyway. Need to have a look at Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham now to get a full top 5. Going to open days for Sheffield and Lancaster(hopefully) this September anywho so that'll be helpful.. even then the required graded are quite high so I'd have to work hard. Which is too much effort until I get into it. xD

Are you going into year 13 rn or currently in clearing or not bothering? And if you are what universities and courses are you looking to go on?

Nah, I'm just a new year 12 myself  I would like to go to Cambridge, Imperial or UCL. They're where I like the most, as well as being top in the uni league tables. I want to do chemistry (via natural sciences), and then specialise in theoretical/computational chemistry

Oh nice.. guessing you're doing pretty good grade wise then? And out of curiosity, why do you like them the most? *ignore my nosiness*

What type of crappy poll selection is that. You excluded nearly everything.

Also, my condolences to anyone who thinks studying in London will be amazing. You poor souls.

Why does Glasgow always get left out of RG lists... sigh.

The idea is that the top Russel Group unis are listed in the poll, as that's where (at least) a very large amount of people on TSR are aiming for. As I stated in the post, if you are aiming for another uni, feel free to post it below. Or is that too complicated?

And what do you mean about studying in London? In the 2018 league tables, Imperial is currently 5th, and UCL is 7th. They're good unis (depending on what you want to do).

Also, hate to be a grammar nazi, but giving "condolences" is typically for when someone has died.

Yeah haha, I'm hoping for GCSE grades 988A^A*A*A*A*A*A*A, and then hopefully a good set of A* predictions at A Level  I like those 3 unis because they're top(ish) for my subject, which I am of course very passionate about (chemistry). Cambridge is 1st  I also like the fact that at Cambridge, you have the option of having time to decide what to specialise in, via natural sciences - in other words, you don't have to decide for certain that you want to do chemistry in the first year - you could change your mind and study something else.

Typically - it can be used in other contexts such as during misfortune - which choosing to live in London would probably cover.

I think the poster was trying to get across that while they are good universities, living in London is usually quite bad, especially if you're a student and don't have bags of money.

Oh alright, good luck then xD ..I'll be lucky if I get an A or 7 in most things tbh.. never mind 8s, 9s and A*s. Yeah.. it can be sort of difficult to not be pushed into a certain box with universities before being given much of a choice.. so do you know much others thinking about uni in your year? ..most don't even know what they're doing in September around here xD

Yeah, you're right, obviously it's hard to say but I would think the majority of people (at this stage) don't really know. I have however noticed a lot of people on here who seemed to know exactly where they want to go, and what they want to do. I didn't/don't expect many to respond to this thread, as you say most don't even know what they're doing in September. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a sort of similar desire as I do

you shouldn't let the lack of BME students stop you from applying AT ALL. we need more people like us applying to these types of universities in order to get the representation we deserve

see like that's why I deep down feel like I should apply so that if I do get a place then I can represent fellow BME's and encourage other minorities to break the stigma and whatnot but then another part of me feels as though there;s no point into putting myself into an awkward situation where I may feel like a complete outsider for 3/4 years of my life

i like to watch a few cambridge youtubers like ibz mo, courtney daniella and shirley bekker who are all wonderful POC, and by watching their videos, whilst they address the obvious concerns about the lack of BME representation, watching them is very inspiring as at the same time they take away my worries about what attending the university as a person of colour would be like. they're all also actively working to encourage more of us from these types of backgrounds to apply. whilst the majority is white, there's definitely a ton of similar people you'll meet from minority backgrounds and even ethnic societies you can join to feel more comfortable. please don't let things like this hold you back from aiming as high as you possibly can with Oxbridge, i guarantee you won't feel like an outsider
Would apply to Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial. But might change Cambridge to Kings in future. Will see in the future

What? I dont think LSE and ICL offer any of the same undergrad courses.
