Start by attempting to construct the decomposition equation.

Okay correct and you've said that one of the products is magnesium oxide. What elements make up a nitrate ion? (There are two)

Start by attempting to construct the decomposition equation.

2mg(no3)2 ----->2 no2 +2 mgo +2o2
is this correct ?

Look at the numbers you have in front of the O2 and NO2. You have to make sure both sides of the equation are balanced.

4?
Here you go:
2 Mg(NO3)2 2 MgO + 4 NO2 + O2

4?

Correct, so now what number should go in front of NO2?
