No, a barcode doesn't work like this in any store. Not in Tesco, not in Primark, not in Carrefour or Migros or Kipa or Liberty. None of them. An electronic article surveillance tag may trigger an alarm, but a barcode will never trigger one. The very idea is silly and complete nonsense to even suggest.

How can any monitoring system detect a barcode covered by, say, a shopping bag or, in your case, your sleeve UNLESS the barcode is somehow magnetic or incorporates an RFID.

It's NOT the barcode they detect, it's the RFID built into the barcoded label.
