The page for MSc Computing Science conversion now says 'Closed for 2017 entry'. I assume this means the course is filled?

It seems that the advanced and specialist courses are closed for 2017 entry too... Seems probable that the places have been filled. However, there hasn't been any updates on the student e-service (still "application being processed"). Maybe the department is still processing those that've applied before the portal closed?

Maybe it just means that applications have closed for 2017 entry? I don't know that the university would have filled up all of the spaces before reviewing all of the applications, which I don't see that they have.

Edit: Now that I've had a look I'm sure it's just the applications which have closed.

Per the other replies, I've just spoken to the Computing department. The jist of the email I received back said:

- The course being closed means that they are no longer accepting new applications.
- My application (which might or might not extend to everyone else) is on a Waiting List. There is no guarantee that any offer will be made to those applicants on this list.
- They don't have a date by which they can make a decision on waiting list applications. However, in previous years it has been the case that you might only find out near the start of term.

Hope that clears up some of the confusion for everyone else.

Thanks for the information! However, it hardly seems fair to the non-uk applicants that they may get an offer near the term date as there's still visa and accommodation matters... But of course an offer is still better than nothing, but the timeline just seems a little rushed. I wished this waiting list process is more transparent for the applicants. Did they only tell you these information after your queries or you'd received a drafted email from the department?

Yes, anyone who hasn't heard back yet is probably on the waitlist. I heard that there were 700+ apps for 64 spots, personally can't think why one of the 64 would drop out at this stage. Even if someone does, can't be more than 2-5 of them - then you think, how large is the waitlist? Looks hopeless :frown:

Wow that's alot of people fighting for one slot. And I'd heard from a friend who's going ICL that the pre-departure briefing for ICL in Singapore was held yesterday, so I guess things really don't look good :frown:

After my queries, I wasn't told that a drafted email is going to be sent out. Figured it would be better to check directly.

If anyone has any information about the number of people on the waiting list that would be grand. I can't imagine it will be too many people.

Guess we can only hope they keep these waiting lists around for good reason!

Hi,

I want to apply the next year but I have a non-technical educational background. I didn't take advanced maths courses when I take my bachelor in business administration and I have a master in finance from one university of Chile (latin america)

But I have work on a technical economic institution (a Central Bank), I work on macroeconomic statistic. Any advice of how can robust my application? I will take the GRE but also I need a plan to demonstrate: "who may not have studied computing exclusively, but who have studied a considerable amount of computing already". I aproved the MOOC: "Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python" of the MIT on EDX and also I have in mind complete the following courses:

- Introduction to computational thinking and data science (MIT - EDX)

- Introduction to probability part 1: The Fundamentals (MIT - EDX)

- Artificial Intelligence (Columbia Micromaster course EDX)

- some courses of the algorithms specialization from coursera

is recommendable the plan of demonstrate experience with MOOC credentials? or instead is more preferable another strategy? Exist many online courses on more advanced topics e.g. deep learning (Andrew Ng. specialization on coursera), robotics (one of the micromaster course in Artificial Intelligence of Coulmbia-EDX). But in my opinion, is more recommendable to build a solid foundation instead of taking those courses if I want to purse a posgraduate course.

Your background is quite different from the MSc Computing courses, and I'm not sure what are the department's views on MOOC modules given that these postgraduate courses are heavily technical and having good foundation would definitely be very important. However, it might be possible if you're looking at the conversion course, and I strongly recommend studying harder to get good GRE scores and perhaps include some of the computing related things you've done in your personal statement. Will be good if you can get some related experience now, before you apply :smile:
