I'm 24 and have no idea what to do with my life

Hi, this is the first time I have ever used anything like this before, I thought I would give it a shot.

I'm 24, graduated over a year ago with a Textiles degree. I have worked in retail and in a letting agency and both was not for me. I hate customer service, answering phones etc. It has never been something I am good at. I am completely lost, I suffer with anxiety and it effects me working. I have never known what to do ever since I left school. I tried Health and Social Care as I really wanted to go into nursing but was not academic enough to understand and failed my exams. I went for an Art course as it was a hobby at the time. Now I have a Textiles degree and I do not live in a place that offers any form of job that links with my degree - and do not want to move home. I am extremely worried and doubting myself as I feel i'm never going to feel happy in a job as i've never known what I wanted to do.

Has anyone ever been through the same? I would love to hear from you as I feel this will help me get through this crap place i'm in.

Firstly, prioritise sorting out your anxiety and keeping it under control - you don't want to go into a new job in a new place with new people and find yourself breaking down under the pressure.

Secondly, is there anything you can name that interests you? Do you do any hobbies or activites?
Im 28 and still have no idea what to do with my life. Like you i hate retail, customer service - tried the health and social care route but failed. Id like to do social sciences but i keep failing maths which is holding me back. Im hoping il just do a course in something that interests me and find a job that way.

I have been given certain ways to calm it down but yes it seems when i'm under pressure it takes over.

I would say for hobbies socialising with friends and fashion/clothes is what I enjoy.

I failed maths twice and ended up having to do an Adult numeracy course just to get into uni as I was so terrible at it! It's nice to know i'm not alone out there, it seems everyone around me has careers and knows exactly what they want. Its daunting.

Then I would highly suggest seeing a therapist who can give you guidance on preventing exactly that, if you haven't already.

Presumably your degree will have taught you at least the basics on how clothing goes from design to product/exhibition; have you looked into which stages interest you the most? I can't say I know much/anything about the process, so I'm not sure I can be much help here.

I have yes. The sessions ended as soon as I started my new job. Now I have lost this one it seems i'm back to my old mind set.

My course was based around Print and Surface Pattern, so producing the design and printing it onto fabric. Which then lead to producing something out of the fabric (clothes, interior etc) I would say what I enjoyed the most was the research of the idea - finding what inspired me by looking at fashion mags and visioning something I could picture me wearing.
Unfortunately every entry level jobs involves talking to customers

I too have social anxiety and I worry a lot about what I'm going to do after I graduate. A lot of the careers that don't involve much human interaction revolve around maths or computers, neither of which are my strong point. I actually was doing a nursing course but hated it and dropped out and now I'm studying psychology.

I'm sorry I don't have any advice to give you since I'm pretty much in the same (or soon to be) situation. Right now I'm researching different careers and how to get into them and hopefully I'll find something that interests me. Also thinking of looking up local workshops in my area for anxiety and see if that helps.

Graduating does not guarantee you a job.

There are plenty people out there still figuring out what they want to do with their life. They might have a job but thats just there as an income.

Go on national careers service - do the tests - if that fails, look for organisations that offer career advice.
Act on your predicament, don't just sit there, seek answers...

Keep as many options as you can. What skills do you want to use in your ideal job?
Ok so you have identified where you do not want to work. Thats a start!

Anxiety - try mindfulness meditation - weird at first but calming as you do it more often.

I'm 24 too. I hate all the jobs you've mentioned so why not go the entrepreneurial route? Figure out what skills/strengths you have and see if you can monetise them.
