Going to uni at 20

Hey guys. Due to unforeseen circumstances, i've had to extend my gap year to another year and i'll be applying for university this year. Im 19 at the moment so i will be 20 once I start University. However, will it be weird being 2 years older than a lot of other people and will there be many people who are also 20 or older? Will it effect social interaction and my experience? Thanks.
It shouldn't have a huge effect. A lot of students go to university later, whether they took a gap year or decided to go later in their twenties.

I turned 20 in the November of my first year of uni so I was nearly 2 years older than a fair few students in my class. I have a lot of friends who are a couple years older and a few that started uni at 18. Most people are between 18-25 (in my class) but we have lots of 25+, everyone just integrates. It's not like in school where people cared about other people's ages:elefant::hat:

So it doesn't feel awkward'/out of place being 20 when others are 18 turning 19?
Cant lie, im kinda sick of these threads. Im in exactly the same position and a simple amount of research will churn out the answers you need. Sooo many people wait to go to Uni, you are not a special unicorn.

It shouldn’t be a problem. There’s a guy who’s 30 in my course and he’s doing amazingly. You might be the oldest in the group but it’s not weird. It also shouldn’t affect your social interaction but that also depends on yourself.
I started university at 22.

I’ve already made friends in my first week.

We have group work, I’m with 5 girls.

It’s not as bad as you think, no one will even notice.
I went into uni halls in my 3rd year and couldn't stand the 18 year old lmao. Full on retarded blocking the sink with spaghetti.
Once you leave school age differences cease to have any real meaning. No one cares how old you are - just are you a nice person, do they like you, that is what matters in terms of friendships and social life.

Were most people a similar age to you? Did you find it ever awkward being older?

No, not at all. Push it to the back of your mind and just think of them (and yourself) as first years/classmates. It'll only be weird if you make it weird really.. someone from my course was in her early 20's (roughly 24) when she started uni and was always going on about how young everyone else seemed to her and it rubbed people up the wrong way (she didn't shut up about it).

Just be yourself and don't let it distract you

One girl is 21, other 19. I started Monday, been in two days. So far, everything has been fine. We’ve created WhatsApp group!
Dont worry. Nobody will care what age you are. You are all there to do one thing at the end of the day and that is get a degree. People of all ages go to university and end up socialising very well.

Nope. Most people might actually be 19 or 20 or will be turning that age shortly into first year, respectively. They could have had to repeat a year group and take a gap year, take 2 gap years etc. Your age difference Isn't dramatic at all, so If you're concerned about it, don't worry, you'll find quite a few people within your age bracket, particularly close to it or possibly even higher than it.

Thanks. Do you think you're more likely to meet people who've taken gap years at red brick or bigger universities than others?

It goes both ways really, you could find people who have taken gap years and people who have not. I can't guarantee whether one is more likely than the other, but I'm definitely sure you'll find people who have taken a gap year or gap years.
Atleast you're not going to uni at 30 to hit on 18 year old girls like that guy who made a thread last week lol. Thats sad
a lot of people in my course are at least 2 years older, you dont really notice the difference tbh
