Who actually still goes to University for the education?

I mean if you wanted a good education there are plenty of prestigious institutions that upload their class lectures to youtube and other websites.

Do we all just go for the piece of paper we get after completing the degree?

I'm in it for the crippling debt obviously 😎
If it was solely about the education, then most students would get their degree through the Open University.

But most go University for the social scene, the piece of paper at the end is a nice bonus.
I'm probs gonna go for that piece of paper and that never ending debt, but I would rather venture out and start a business or something.
Like most people on TSR, I went to university for the opportunity to lose my virginity.

It was three years of disappointment.

What do you mean social scene?

As in in like socialising with people like yourself?
No we go to get a well paid, stable job that is there waiting for us from the day we graduate :smile:

im on my 3rd year of engineering but i should have done an apprenticeship

you need like top A levels for higher appretiships and its super competitive. i took the easy route with uni

Does viewing a lecture intellectually validate you? No, you need to know that your insight is correct and comprehensive. You need an expert in the field to approve of what you are saying.

Without that assessment, you're just another "Internet intellectual" talking utter shite and thinking you're pretty smart because your dimwit pals are impressed by you.

You should cross ref sources, clarify points with others and do lots of problems. Unless you're a PhD student or near expert, you don't get much contact time, esp 1-1 (even at Oxbridge).

World's full of people who chat BS, doesn't detract from vast amount of quality stuff out there. Stuff uploaded online by experts; inc Q&A sessions, worked solutions etc is what OP refers to.

I'd say online learning out of self interest is more enriching than just prepping to pass exams for cert/job. Being smart/resourceful is a prereq.

The question is irrelevant unless you are going to work for yourself.

If you work for someone else and that job requires a particular degree, it doesn’t matter if you know everything they won’t hire you.

If you know everything and want work for yourself then subject to not having a regulator saying you must have a degree to carry out that kind of work then you can.

That depends on the depth of knowledge really. If your viewing some slides and think you know everything there is to know then you’re a bit of a mong

You don't need 1 on 1 contact time, as long as they are reading your work and verifying its quality.

If your only source is the slides, why would you think that there is more to learn outside of them? Unless you've been to uni before or you have done outside reading, you won't realise how little you in fact know.
