I am a Computer Science Trainee - Ask Me Anything

Inspired by @Missjacques, I created this thread to answer any questions you might have about anything to do with the PGCE year.

I am currently doing mine in Computer Science (secondary).
Would you recommend the pgce to a comp sci student such as myself?

I went straight to the PGCE from Computer Science - I graduated in CS earlier this year.

It's good because all the knowledge is still fresh and I haven't "specialised" in something already, like programming. My mentor says my knowledge is a big advantage for the CS curriculum and will help me to teach the syllabus.

I do recommend it. There is a teacher in my dept. that also went straight from his degree in CS to his PGCE and doesn't regret it - he is still there 3 years later, but YMMV!
Do you think that a degree in computer science helps in terms of opening up opportunities and/or jobs that you could prospectively escalate in?

Yes of course it does help. CS covers a broad range of topics and you can go into practically anything you enjoyed in your course.

It depends on what kind of jobs you are looking for, but I don't know much about that since I haven't tried looking.

Do you have any tips for writing the personal statement?
What do you think of your placement school so far and how do you think you're coping compared to other trainees?
Thanks

Personal statement
I set mine up like this:
1st paragraph: motivation (why do I want to teach CS?)
2nd paragraph: school experience
3rd paragraph: subject knowledge and skills

My placement school
The classes are generally really good, but there was one class that really got me thinking "Will I be able to handle behaviour like this?" and "Is this a good career move?", but thankfully thats not a class I'll be teaching so I don't need to fret over that kind of behaviour problem :P

We've gone into schools only this week so I think we are coping equally as well, at this stage.
