so if i put it in a pot with a bunch of other stuff and cooked it for 2 hours then i can't reuse bay leaves or star anise?

Bay leaves no, star anise I think I have heard can be reused but have never used it myself!

Er, that's probably why. Star anise isn't super cheap, if you're on a budget.

Granted I don't know if reusing it makes it taste any worse, it's not normally done.

It sounds like a terrible culinary decision. If I can't afford to make something, I just don't make it?

Tbh you might as well just try and see if it does anything next time I guess! Put it in the fridge if you do though, I *think* that's what I read people were doing...
