Think of it in this way, how does it make you feel, what do you smell, use your senses to dig deeper behind the words, such as:

Terrorised:
Terrifying
Fearful
Scary
Black
Dark
Explosive
Injury
Pain
Abusive
Hurt
Trauma
Religious extremism.

Tormented:
Guilty
Worried
Nail biting
Weary
Scary
Self inflicted
Long term anxiety

If I saw the two words together I would think the character was terrorised, very fearful for their safety, in a dark, dank place with no safe place to rest. It really gets your blood pumping. Who is doing it to the person, why are they doing it, is the character going to escape, what is the character feeling, who will help them and so on.

See underneath the text to the feeling and you wont go far wrong.

PS I got an 8 merit/A* in this years GCSE English Language (6 short of the 9).
