I can't wear new clothes

Does anyone else have this problem?

I buy new clothes because I want to look good and not embarrass people I am with when I go out like to eat or something with them but then everyone stares at me and laughs at me for being so arrogant that I think I deserve to be able to wear nice clothes. I have a lot of clothes I've worn once then chucked in the wardrobe never to wear again because I felt so bad wearing them. It doesn't seem to matter what I pick. I stick to 1 pair of jeans and I have like 6 tshirts but some of them are getting little holes in, I keep sewing them but it's depressing I want to look good like other people.
Who is staring and laughing at you ?
Who thinks that you are arrogant to wear nice clothes? Strangers or the people you hang out with?

Your wardrobe should have the basics, good quality, no holes! You don't always have to spend money on going out clothes. Just a few pieces. If you have a lot of unworn clothes, try to sell them or donate them to charity.

Other people. Not the people I'm with but like people in the street or supermarket or bars; everywhere I go.

Strangers.

Yeah, once every couple years I give the clothes to charity, it's just really upsetting to do when I look round and see other people looking nice but I feel like a tramp. I feel ashamed to be seen with my family because I know I probably look a mess.
Who cares what strangers think! I think the problem is you lack confidence in yourself - so you present yourself with low confidence and worry too much about what other people think. Your friends are your friends because of who you are, not what you wear or look like. Be proud to be yourself! If you are unhappy with your fashion, you could go shopping with a friend and ask them to recommend a few pieces?

You are mentally ill. Seek professional help.

What the ****. Book an appointment with your GP immediately so they can refer you to a specialist.

This sounds like extreme social anxiety.

I only really have one friend and when I ask them what they think about some new piece of clothing they tell me it looks ok (or they tell me if it looks really bad) but that doesn't stop other people from staring at me, whispering about me, and laughing. I don't want to lose my one friend which is the main reason I even bother trying to look decent, I don't want them to feel embarrassed to be seen with me.

I see a psychiatrist. I just want to look halfway good like everyone else though.

What you report are the manifestations of schizophrenia, which no-one here is even remotely qualified to address.

I told my friend about the laughing and she doesn't believe me either. :frown:

yep definitely sounds like some sort of psychosis. i don't think anyone is laughing at you for wearing new clothes, why would they?

Everytime I let on that I'm seeing a psychiatrist, people stop taking me seriously and put everything down to mental illness. My mum and friend do the same thing. :frown:
