Why do mainstream media copy the rubbish from each other instead of proper journalism

Last week the prime minister gives a speech at the conservative conference but the they all ignore the content and instead focus on a sign falling down and her cold and security lapses, as if that is anything but bad luck.

Why can't they think independently and not misconstrue everything by focussing on irrelevance then twisting it.
If they all just reported the content of the speech, would they not all still look like they were copying each other?
because for-profit media needs to get the attention to stay in business. Dry notes of a speech are not as eye catching as a prankster handing the pm her p45
The contents of her speech was covered in depth on the broadsheet rolling politics blogs on the day. I was reading them.

First article published on the day that comes up when I search for her speech:

No, because that's what's important and what you might expect. Someone has a cold in October is not important; the organ donor system will be changed to opt-out is. The fact that all media outlets jump on the same stories and debates when something insignificant causes them shows the same kind of people are behind different factions of the media and copy each other.

True, but generally they are always looking for ways to back up their agenda.

When Corbyn was first elected leader he was demanised totally unfairly by the BBC, now because they put avoiding brexit above moderate economics and interventionist foreign policy they are so pro-Labour and look for ways to damage the Tories credentials.

The content was covered. It wasnt very impressive.
The other stuff was more significant because her leadership is in question. the whole thing was a disaster for her. Ots right all the media reported on what she said and the leadership aspect.
