Don't get the wording of this question - MATHS :(

Xiang recieves her gas bill. She used 1937 units of gas. She pays £0.0842 for the first 512 units and £0.0786 for the remainder. Tax is added at 5% of the total.

What is Xiang's total gas bill to the nearest penny?

Any ideas?

I get 163p some people are saying it is 17p

Can you post your working out? The price given is the price per unit ... I've never seen a gas bill that small so try again

I know :frown:

Here they are

(0.0842 X 512) + (0.0786 X 1425) = 155.1154

1.05 X 155.1154 = 163p (to the nearest penny)

I am probs wrong :/

It the wording off the question that just breaks my mind. £0.0842 for the first 512 units. So £0.0842 = 512 units?

No - the cost per unit for 512 is £0.0842 so your working was correct except for the units

So I do 1937-512 to find the remaining units... which is going to be £0.0786.

But I dont get it so is this working correct

1.05 X ( 0.0842 + 0.0786 )

I got 163, although you may want to check your units. If each unit is 7 or 8p and nearly 2,000 units have been used, it's going to be a lot more than 163p. Do a "back-of-the-envelope" ballpark calculation first so you know roughly how big an answer you're expecting.

you do 512*0.0842 = £43.1104
then do 1937-512 (for the remainder). then you do 1425*0.0786 = £112.005.
then do £43.1104+£112.005 = £155.1154.
then to get the cost including tax you do £155.1154*1.05 = £162.87.
The answer is not in pence as the values given in the question are in pounds.

First step:
(£0.0842*512)
This gives you the cost for the first 512 units

Second step:
(£0.0786+(1937-512))
This gives you the cost of the remaining units

Third step:
Add these 2 values together to get the total

Step 4:
Calculate 5% of the total by multiplying by 5/100

Step 5:
Add the 5% to the total
(answer to step 4 + answer to step 3)

yea that works I just condensed step 4 and 5 into one. Also be careful as in step 2 you need to do £0.0786*(1937-512) not +
