Do I take this job I don't need or not?

I'm 17 and in year 13. Recently I applied for a job at Topman just to see what the process was like (I've never had a job before or applied for one). I had the interview yesterday and today they phoned me and said I can have the job if I want it.

It's for 12-14 hours a week, the store is open until 9pm as it's a massive London store. I have some free lessons on some afternoons and they said they're very flexible to make my shifts whenever I want with no weekends as they want the staff, so I could leave school at lunch, work through my free lessons and beyond until the shift finishes, for 2 shifts a week. I don't need the money at all as my family is very well off but it would give me experience and I'd meet new people. I just don't want it to eat away at my time as this is obviously a very important school year. What should I do?

You could always give it a go and if you can't manage your time then hand on your notice it's better to have something on your CV than having nothing when you start uni

take the job for the experience but don't let it interfere with school. only work after school hours and weekends or it'll distract you

How the hell did you get that

My main worry is if they have me finish at 9 and after getting home I'll be really tired and not in a great mood for school the next day. They said I can do whatever hours I want on weekdays and/or weekends but I really like spending weekends doing everything I want to do. It's a hard decision in all regards.



I applied and they called me in for an interview. They liked my CV, my answers to their questions and I have a great reference from my school.

I've never had a job so I've never worked at McDonald's. My CV contains a paragraph I've written about my personal profile, my GCSEs, AS results and school activities I've been involved in.

I guess you won't know if you can cope until you try it

Do it and if you don't like it, just quit (assuming you can in such a short time). You say you don't need the money, but either way I think it will be good to meet new people and to socialise etc. But if you truly think its affecting your school grades then just quit, you'll be better off in the future.

I don't have that though as I did not go to school. I have no GCSE or activities

I guess you're both right. In the contract it says I'm supposed to give a month's notice if I want to quit but realistically they wouldn't be able to do anything if I just walked out. The worst they could do is blacklist me for working for their company again (I very much doubt they'd take me to court for breach of contract given the circumstances and that they'd have nothing to gain out of it anyway). I think it would be good for me to see what a working environment is like and it would be good for my CV.



What do you expect me to do about that?
